A new DLC story chapter for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake has arrived! The story revolves around Wutai operative Yuffie Kisaragi’s attempt to infiltrate Shinra’s headquarters to steal their ultimate Materia. Set after the events of the base game, players will control Yuffie in this bite-sized adventure. While you can simply focus on beating the main story missions, the new Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade DLC (Titled INTERmission) comes with several side quests you can also partake. One of these is a mini-game in Shinra HQ that requires you to smash a bunch of colored boxes in an attempt to earn the highest score possible. Dubbed “Basic Training,” achieving 20,000 points can seem like a daunting, impossible task. Thankfully, there’s a pretty easy method for achieving it.
How to Get a High Score in Basic Training
Before you go into the mini-game, make sure to equip and fully upgrade your 4-Point Shuriken weapon. While this may seem like an odd choice, the sheer mobility allows you to swiftly zoom around the map. Additionally, we will be using Yuffie’s Art of War ability to absolutely smash through hordes of boxes. What you’ll need to get into the habit of is throwing the shuriken at a target with Triangle and then immediately pressing Triangle to pull Yuffie towards that box. You can chain this, letting her zoom around the area right after she smashes open a box.
When the mini-game begins, launch yourself forward and start destroying all the 100 and 200 point boxes in the first room. You should build up enough ATB by the time you clear the room to use Art of War on the 1,500 point box directly in the doorway. Smash the box apart, then use Yuffie’s Triangle throw to pull her towards the stack of purple boxes on the left. Once everything is trashed, quickly sprint to the next room, use Yuffie’s shuriken pull to the orange boxes before throwing it at the small red crate with the clock symbol on it. Destroying this will net you 10 extra seconds on the clock, which is critical in succeeding.
Ignore the purple crate the time box was sitting on and move to the stack of purple crates. Use Art of War when you’re right next to them to hit multiple boxes, breaking them all. Now turn around and smash the tower of 100 point orange crates before going behind the metal half wall. Forget about the 1,500 point box on the right and look left to see a stack of purple boxes with a time box in the center. Once again use a combination of Yuffie’s attacks and Art of War to bust through them all. Then chain Yuffie’s shuriken to pull her up the incline until you get to the next big room.
Throw the shuriken at the time box in the center before moving down to the left to decimate the row of purple boxes. Now head into the small room on the left where there’s a wall of orange and purple boxes on both sides. Use Art of War liberally here, as there are a ton of crates you need to bash open. This area can net you a ton of points, but you can easily get bogged down in here. Because of this, it’s critical you use Yuffie’s abilities to bust them apart as efficiently as possible. Once they are all broken, run out of the room, hang a left, dash past the 1,500 point crate, and throw Yuffie’s shuriken at the red time box. There’s a moving panel in front of it, so only throw the shuriken when the panel is on the left.
Now shuriken pull yourself to the middle of the last room and use Yuffie’s Art of War to break the stack of 1,500 point boxes. When those are broken, run to the back right corner to reveal another timer box on your left. Break this open, run back out, and take down the last 1,500 point box in the room. This should be enough to get you over the 20,000 point mark and earn you some easy Materia. Again, it’s critical you use Yuffie’s mobility and abilities, otherwise, it’s nearly impossible to destroy enough crates before the timer expires.
