Dark Souls III crashing on your PC? Here’s how to get around it

Dark Souls Dark Souls Dark Souls. Dark Souls? Dark Souls.

Anyway, if all your friends are playing Dark Souls III and you feel like you’re missing out, but the game keeps crashing on you by the first bonfire — never fear. There are a couple temporary workarounds, while we await an official response and/or patch from publisher Bandai-Namco.

Solution 1: Turn Down the Lights

Some users are reporting that setting the lighting quality to ‘Low’ is sufficient to bypass this glitch. You can also experiment with dialing down other graphical settings if you have no luck with this one.

Solution 2: Cover Up

It seems that if you approach the bonfire while wearing a full, face-concealing helmet — such as the one the Knight class starts with — it will let you through unscathed. This might mean rerolling your character, mind you, but at least it should allow you to advance in the game.

You might also have luck combining both the above solutions, if neither works on its own.

And to reiterate, these aren’t official solutions from Bandai, just ones discovered by players on the Steam forums and elsewhere. Rest assured that Bandai-Namco has received plenty of user reports on these problems and we can expect some kind of official solution soon. This is just a means to tide players over until the company is able to respond.

Here’s a video of the glitch in action, if you’re not sure you’re experiencing the same thing.
