This Animal Crossing Instagram Is Dedicated to Scathing Leftist Memes

Raymond said ACAB, it's true.

There are plenty of great Animal Crossing social media accounts, like the Twitter account dedicated to Roald the penguin. But I think I’ve finally found my favorite one of them all: an Instagram account dedicated to extremely good socialist and communist memes called Animarx Crossing.

Named Animarx Crossing in honor of none other than socialist revolutionary Karl Marx, the account was opened up in January 2020 and has steadily provided leftist memes since then. Sometimes, they’re as simple as putting renders of villagers on a background with text; sometimes, they’re edits of screenshots from Animal Crossing: New Leaf or Animal Crossing: New Horizons; other times, they’re more elaborate posters with information.

One of my favorites has to be this one of Katrina, the series’ fortune teller. The original quote is, “And remember that bad times…are just times that are bad.” It’s been a quote that has actually been personally inspiring for me because it’s so simple in its essence and truth. We all will have good times and bad times, and they’re all temporary.

But the Animarx Crossing iteration, which reads, “And remember that bad times…are probably capitalism’s fault” is 1) entirely as poignant and 2) true.

This one made me think, “This one’s for J.K Rowling” before I even saw the caption.

And this is my favorite Isabelle daily greeting. I truly love it when she says this every time I turn the game on.

The owner of Animarx Crossing absolutely has her pulse on the latest that’s happening, especially since the most recent uprising of global Black Lives Matter protests. On May 25, white Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck for over eight minutes, even after Floyd cried out that he couldn’t breathe. Floyd later died in police custody. His tragic death is only the latest in a long line of unjust deaths at the hands of police brutality—a systemic issue that disproportionately affects the black community. (Black people are three times more likely to be killed by police than white people and were 24% of those killed in 2019 despite being only 13% of the population.)

On June 7, videos of anti-racism protestors in Bristol, Britain taking down a statue of slave trader Edward Colston quickly went viral on Twitter. It’s estimated that Colston put 84,000 African men, women, and children, who had been traded as slaves in West Africa, on ships. It is also estimated that around 19,000 of them died on their journey to the Caribbean and the Americas. In an act that can’t be described as anything besides poetic justice, after toppling the statue, protesters rolled it into Bristol Harbour.

As Cherry canonically says, the feeling of watching the video above is worth more than a million Nook Miles Tickets.

The Animal Crossing: New Horizons community using the game for political expression isn’t anything new. In the age of COVID-19, it quickly became a new way for Hong Kong protesters to fight for democracy. Animarx Crossing doesn’t just post witty, scathing screencaps; the account also has Instagram stories with slides of information on protesting, education, donations, and more.

The screencaps are incredibly witty and scathing, though. We all know the sea bass joke gets old real fast, but this one? This one never does.

Speak it. Fuck our landlord, who’s forcing us to move in the middle of COVID-19. Also, yes to speaking the truth about Tom Nook in the caption.

i’ve personally concluded that tom nook is not a landlord. nowhere does it indicate that he owns the land, especially since now you can freely move all buildings anywhere on the island. he is simply a contractor who you can pay to renovate your house at your choosing. it is unclear whether he does the work himself though, but let’s just assume he does – benefit of the doubt. the debt you owe to him isn’t rent or a mortgage, it’s payment for upgrades to your house that you choose to make. the only annoying thing was the unnecessary currency he had to bring in, but we can overlook that. in conclusion, tom nook is not a landlord but a construction worker and this is the last i will ever say on this topic

Just to drive that point fully home, Tom Nook is an ally.

As the daughter of a grocery store employee, I can confirm this to be extremely true.

Be sure to check out the Animarx Crossing account for more incredible edits of the cute villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons encouraging all of us to dismantle the systems of oppression that exist to enact violence upon us on a daily basis.

ACAB. Black Lives Matter. Tear down the system. Fuck capitalism. Fuck Donald Trump. Fuck Jeff Bezos. Fuck white supremacy. Defund the police. Justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Eric Garner, Philando Castile, Sandra Bland, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, and every black person whose life has been robbed by the police, caught on film and otherwise.
