What is the Correct Forest Maze Path in Super Mario RPG

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is one of the most beloved games of the SNES era. Mixing the turn-based gameplay of titles like Final Fantasy with Nintendo’s colorful world, developer Square Enix crafted one of the most unique Mario titles to date. Set in the Mushroom Kingdo… Okay look, I get it. Why am I even writing about this in the year of our Luigi 2020? This game came out in 1996. Do you know how long that ago that was? People were losing their minds over a vibrating Elmo toy and that modern remake of Romeo and Juliet released. God, that was bizarre. I mean watching John Leguizamo just chew up dialogue definitely made my future high school English experience better, so I guess it wasn’t that bad.

Anyway here’s the path you need to take through the Forest Maze so you can fight Bowyer.

Forest Maze Path

Before we get into the path, we should go over how this maze actually works. When Mario entered he will be faced with four paths (if we include the one you just used), each of which will lead to a different area. There will be some enemies flying above you, along with the occasional arrow raining down from the sky. To avoid confusion, we are breaking these up into four quadrants shown in the picture above: Bottom, Left, Right, and Top. The location of these will always be oriented as if you are starting from the bottom, not the direction Mario is facing when he enters a new section. You’ll know you’re on the right path if you see Geno making his way ahead of you!

To successfully make your way through the forest maze, you will want to go:

  • Right
  • Top
  • Top
  • Right
  • Top
  • Left

Following this path will lead you to a large area that triggers a cutscene upon entering. Inside you’ll find Bowyer yammering on about how many arrows he has been firing. However, if you are a completionist and want to get a few extra items there’s an alternate route you can take.

The path to the secret area in the Forest Maze is:

  • Left
  • Bottom
  • Bottom
  • Left

If you followed the right path you’ll be presented with a stump you can warp down into a cavern. Inside you’ll find five chests that contain coins, a Mushroom, Flower, and Frog Coin. These aren’t essential for beating Bowyer, but you can never have too many health and FP items before a boss fight. Just make sure to manage them, since Bowyer’s gimmick is the ability to turn off one of your buttons, forcing you to adapt during the fight.

Congratulations, you now have the guide I wish I had when I was nine.
