A ‘Prominent’ Japanese Studio is Reportedly Making a Silent Hill Reboot

And they might not be the only one.

According to a report from VGC, Konami has approached a “prominent Japanese developer” about a Silent Hill reboot, and is planning on revealing the project sometime this summer.

Sources close to the matter told VGC the new game would be a “departure” from previous games in the series, but didn’t elaborate on how, exactly. Rumors of a Silent Hill revival have been circulating in various forms since the cancellation of Silent Hills in 2015, including reports that the cancelled game would be brought back from the dead in some form. Those were eventually shut down by Konami, which said in a statement that it hadn’t closed the door on the franchise, but wouldn’t be bringing back the ill-fated horror game.

As for what developer is working with Konami, it’s anyone’s guess at this point. There’s no shortage of Japanese developers with horror experience, and depending on how much of a departure this is it could be landing in someone’s lap that doesn’t usually come up in these conversations. And also, “prominent” can mean different things to different people. So it could be someone like Capcom, which has plenty of horror experience with Resident Evil. There’s also Koei Tecmo, which has also worked on the Fatal Frame series. Albeit not recently.

Elsewhere in the report, VGC says it learned from sources that Until Dawn developer Supermassive was approached to work on a Silent Hill game at some point, but the deal never went through.

In other news:

The entire story was prompted by a quote from Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno, who told GamesIndustry.biz the studio had been working with a famous publisher on another horror game following the launch of The Medium last month. This led to speculation that the team was working on a Silent Hill game, which, if true, would mean two Silent Hill projects are in the works.

“We’ve been working for more than a year on another gaming project, another horror IP, and we’re doing this with a very famous gaming publisher,” Babieno said. “I can’t tell you who. I can’t tell you what the project is, but I’m pretty sure when people realize we’re working on it, they will be very excited.”
