No Man’s Sky’s Expeditions Update is All About Exploring the Galaxy Together

The whole thing is focused on creating galactic communities.

The No Man’s Sky machine just doesn’t seem to stop, does it? Hello Games has announced a new expansion for its procedurally generated space exploration game just a little over a month since its last content update brought animal companions into the mix. This new expansion is called Expeditions, and is available now to all players.

Expeditions is all about travel and traversal, and doing it with your friends by your side. In this new mode, players will start on the same planet, and work together as part of a community. When No Man’s Sky first launched, it was a fairly solitary experience, so to see it this many years later really leaning into the social potential of an open-universe game is pretty wild to see.

While cooperative expeditions make up the broad strokes, there are also a handful of quality-of-life changes coming alongside the new patch. Including a new user interface, reducing load times, and making the discovery database cross-platform compatible. The last of which is good for these kinds of cooperative goals Expeditions is putting forth, as No Man’s Sky started supporting crossplay between PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One last year.

No Man’s Sky has become nearly unrecognizable from what it was when it originally launched on PlayStation 4 in 2016. The kind of story that led to Bioware spending over a year of time and resources on Anthem just to put it all in the bin.
