It’s likely that you won’t need to fast travel until you venture just a bit further into the main story, but in the meantime, you can expect to have a few campfires unlocked by then.

That is all — from now on you’re free to fast travel to any campfire you have unlocked. Sadly, you can’t just fuck off during fights and disappear out of thin air, but you shouldn’t have a problem doing so in any other situation.
