Xbox E3 2019: Fable 4 Trailer, Gameplay & Details

What to expect from Fable 4 at the Xbox E3 2019 press briefing.

The Xbox E3 2019 press briefing is definitely set to be one of the biggest pillars of this year’s show. What with PlayStation pulling out this year, and Nintendo sticking to a prerecorded Nintendo Direct, the way is open for Microsoft to blow the doors down at this year’s expo. But what can we expect from the maker of Xbox? Well, if certain leaks and rumors are to be believed, Fable 4 at E3 2019 is one likely bet.

An allegedly leaked video (which has since been all but scrubbed from the internet) details Fable 4 and its basic premise. It describes a “completely open” world that lets you build your own towns, go just about anywhere, and never actually complete the main story. Travel between different planets — and even through time — appear to be on the table. Oh, and it’s up to the player to stop an asteroid from destroying it all.

You can find the original set of details at this reddit post. Just remember to take it with a huge grain of salt, as one does with these things. There’s no official confirmation that the leak is real. Even if it is, these things are always subject to change — with what was true one minute shifting more and more as games get closer to launch. That should be especially true for a potential Fable 4, seeing as the series has a history of over-promising an under-delivering. Though it’s often been a fun RPG franchise in its own right!

Anyway, the leak goes on to explain that a big, bad king has reduced the world of Fable to rubble. He reconstructed the Tattered Spire from Fable 2 — which grants its ruler any wish — to bring down an asteroid earlier in the timeline. As such, the usual nations of previous Fable games are no more, and Fable 4 is set in an entirely new land.

Some remnants of the old world remain on other planets that escaped the devastation. You can travel to them via Demon Door, at some point, but it’s unclear if these zones will be separate open worlds, or just minor side locations. Theresa, the Heroes Guild, and Jack of Blades are all said to return.

Fable 4 rumors further indicate that the game will be developed by Playground: makers of Forza Horizon. Microsoft purchased the studio outright in 2018. It was also revealed that the company is, in fact, working on a “non-racing” open-world game. That lines up neatly with the speculation around Fable 4. While it seems like a major departure for the racing studio, the Forza Horizon games are notably open-world in nature. So there may be more DNA shared between previous Playground games and Fable than is immediately apparent.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Fable 4 will feature at E3 2019. The game might still be quite a ways off! Microsoft, for its part, has promised “trailers for unannounced titles coming in 2019 and beyond.” So it’s as likely as anything, if the supposed leak turns out to be true. We’ll just have to see when the Microsoft E3 2019 press briefing begins next week. You can watch it online on June 9 at 1 p.m. PDT.
