Xbox’s X018 event happened today in Mexico City! The livestream featured some pretty major announcements. Here’s a roundup of everything we saw!
Xbox Game Pass Grows
PUBG, the game that really jump started the battle royale game rush and made its console debut on Xbox One, is coming to Xbox Game Pass on November 12. This means if you’re a member of Xbox’s (pretty stellar) subscription service, you can download and play PUBG as part of your account as long as you’re a member.
There were 16 current and future games announced for Xbox Game Pass. They include:
- Void Bastards
- Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
- Ori and the Blind Forest
- Ori and the Will of the Wisps
- Thief of Thieves
- Kingdom Two Crowns
- Supermarket Shriek
- Mutant Year Zero
- Pathologic 2
- Secret Neighbor
- The Good Life
- Agents of Mayhem
- MXGP 3
- Thomas Was Alone
Speaking of Xbox Game Pass, new members can get one month for just $1, which is a steep, steep discount on an already fairly high value service. Not bad!
Xbox Acquires inXile & Obsidian
In the closing announcement of the show, Microsoft announced it had acquired RPG expert studios inXile and Obsidian. The former is known for the Wasteland and Bard’s Tale series. The latter is known for Pillars of Eternity and all-time classic Fallout New Vegas.
These moves obviously bolster Microsoft’s game lineups moving forward and should at least put in a dent in the argument that Nintendo and Sony are miles ahead in terms of exclusive content. Time will tell.
Void Bastards is a strategy shooter coming from Irrational Games’ co-founder Jonathan Chey. It has a very lush cel-shaded art style and mixes strategic planning with first person shooter mechanics.
The long-awaited action sandbox featuring Terry Crews will launch on February 15, 2019. Wrecking Zone is the name of the multiplayer mode coming with the game. Though not included in their Xbox Game Pass announcement package, Crackdown 3 will also launch on the service. The original Crackdown will be available on Microsoft Store for free until November 30.
Hellblade on Xbox Game Pass
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, the acclaimed action game from Ninja Theory, is coming to Xbox Game Pass on December 17. December seems like as good a time as any to experience a graphically rich, intense exploration of mental illness.
Kingdom Hearts 3
Winnie the Pooh is in! There was a Ratatouille cooking-based minigame announced. Some Frozen characters were shown.
Final Fantasy Explosion
Also announced during the Kingdom Hearts 3 segment was the revelation that all three Final Fantasy XIII games are coming to backwards compatibility on Xbox One next week. In addition to this, the following Final Fantasy games are coming to Xbox One next year:
- Final Fantasy VII
- Final Fantasy IX
- Final Fantasy X
- Final Fantasy X-2
- Final Fantasy XII
This is all well and good, but I’m depressed about Final Fantasy VIII never getting any of this love. Oh well.
Sea of Thieves: The Arena
A brand new mode is coming to Sea of Thieves called the Arena. Developers on stage at the event described the mode as a high octane affair where teams of pirates will be competing for treasure. This is in contrast to the normal adventure mode, where players can more or less choose the kind of experience they have. Maybe you just want to chill out and watch the sunset on your boat. In the Arena, there’s no time for that.
New Jump Force footage was shown briefly. Battles between Dragon Ball Z standouts Goku, Frieza, and Vegeta were shown. It looks fittingly bonkers! You’ll be able to get your hands on it in February 2019.
State of Decay 2 Zedhunter
A new State of Decay 2 free update was announced called Zedhunter. It promises to up the carnage with new vehicles, weapons, etc.
Just Cause 4
A new trailer and footage were shown for the upcoming demolition sandbox. According to the trailer, there will be tornadoes. Our hero surfed on top of a car. The developers also showed off some of the new tricks you can do with your grappling hook. Just Cause 4 looks appropriately wild and will launch on December 4.
Xbox announced a giving campaign where they will donate $5 (up to $1 million) for every tweet, Facebook post, and Instagram post with the hashtag #GiveWithXbox that celebrates “gaming together.” Supported charities include Child’s Play and Operation Supply Drop.
Devil May Cry 5
A bizarre amount of time was spent on The Void, which is Devil May Cry 5’s practice mode. Players will be able to face different enemies and try different weapon loadouts in this mode. Super attacks in DMC5 were discussed, including the game-changing announced that there’s an attack called the Pasta Breaker.
Also, Nero can use the Mega Buster from Mega Man. Holy smokes.
New Minecraft modes were discussed, including a mode where you live the life of luxury decorating mansions and rolling around in fancy cars.
A new expansion called Cats & Pandas was also announced via incredibly cute trailer.
Mouse & Keyboard Support
Official mouse and keyboard support was announced for many games, but most notable among them is Fortnite. Mouse and keyboard users will be paired with other mouse and keyboard users according to Epic community manager Nathan Mooney.
Forza Horizon 4 Fortune Island
Forza Horizon 4‘s first expansion (the largest in series history, according to devs) is Fortune Island. The short announcement focused on the treacherous terrain, lightning storms, and the inclusion of the Northern Lights. Lovely!
We absolutely loved Forza Horizon 4, so look forward to more coverage of Fortune Island soon.
Wild Black Friday Deals
Major Nelson returned as Crazy Larry to introduce some pretty good Xbox Black Friday deals, including Xbox One X for $399.99. That’s a pretty big discount on Microsoft’s ULTRA POWERFUL console.
