Everyone knew id Software would continue development of the Doom franchise after the reboot in 2016. Doom Eternal is exactly that. Set to be the fifth main title in the series, Doom Eternal ups the stakes from the last installment. Hell has not only emerged on Mars, but it’s also spread to Earth, and other planets.
Doom Eternal sports twice as many demons than the reboot with id promoting fan favorites like the Archvile, Pain Elemental, and the Arachnotron. Other highlights include the new super shotgun which comes equipped with a grappling hook to pull you towards demons, a retractable wrist blade, and a shoulder-mounted flamethrower.

Doom Eternal Details at E3 2019
Back at QuakeCon 2019, id Software actually detailed a ton of information about the game alongside a 15-minute gameplay preview. In it, we saw a lot of the aforementioned weapons and demons, but we also got a look at a new “Invastion” game mode. When activated during your campaign efforts, other online players can jump into your game as demons and attempt to take you down. Details are light on this one. We’re not sure how it’ll all be balanced, but if you aren’t a fan of the idea, you can disable the feature.
Story wise, the demonic invasions have spread to multiple planets. We know we’ll be visiting both Phobos and Earth, but we may potentially end up fighting Hell in more locations with id promising “never-before-seen worlds.” The website also explains that we’ll discover something about the Doom Slayer’s origins which should be exciting for fans of the franchise.
From what gameplay we’ve seen so far, Doom Eternal looks to be way more maneuverable than previous games. While you always had a lot of speed and ridiculous jumping capabilities, Eternal offers more. There’s a dash button now, allowing you to move short distances and dodge enemy projectiles. The Slayer can now swing from certain hanging objects like broken pipes too. Combine that with wall climbing and the Meat Hook and you can get around levels very quickly now.
There’s also a new asymmetric multiplayer mode called Battlemode. In it, a single Doom Slayer takes on two player controlled enemy demons. Details were sparse, but the gameplay preview showed all kinds of abilities with the demons able to spawn AI helpers.
Doom Eternal will release on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on November 22, 2019.
