Between the success of Skylanders and the warm reception of last year’s Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, it was not at all surprising that Activision is gearing for a remake of one of the most beloved game series of the late 1990’s, namely Spyro, in the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. While the series’ original developer, Insomniac Games isn’t involved with this release, it makes perfect sense that Skylanders’ creator, Toys for Bob is helming this remake, given that the toys to life series is part of the Spyro universe.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy’s presence at E3 2018 was certainly worthy of attention, especially if you grew up with the original PlayStation games. That said, both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners will get to experience this package since Activision–not Sony–is the publisher.
Like the remix of a song, game remakes can deliver a faithful yet updated recreation of the source material (eg. Shadow of the Colossus) or take some creative liberties at the risk of upsetting some of the fanbase (eg. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes). Spyro Reignited Trilogy leans toward the latter. Based off the above gameplay clip, Toys for Bob has taken much of their imaginative design experience from Skylanders and given Spyro’s early settings a proper cartoonish makeover. And even if the 1-to-1 replication of level layouts might lead to easy playthroughs for hardcore Spyro fans, that doesn’t necessarily result in a diminished experience.
The best part? Spyro Reignited Trilogy is out sooner than you might think, with a scheduled release of September 21st this year.
