Nintendo’s E3 2018 Direct was–even by Nintendo standards–unusually dominated by single game, Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Yet the developer/publisher did manage to fit a two-minute trailer that revealed the next installment in the Fire Emblem series, Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
It was only six years ago that Nintendo and Intelligent Systems were mentally prepared to sunset the series with Fire Emblem: Awakening. Little did they know how the game’s refined combat and engrossing romance mechanic would win over longtime fans while gaining a legion of new ones. Since then, we’ve seen the ambitious follow-up, Fates, the Echoes remake, a well-received mobile game, and a Musou spin-off, Fire Emblem Warriors.
Three Houses appears to follow in the tradition of Intelligent System’s penchant for trying out new gameplay ideas, which often helps each game stand on their own. To put it another way, embrace the new territory that each new Fire Emblem explores and don’t hold your breath for an Awakening sequel.
Three Houses looks to be as much of a design departure as, well, the last Fire Emblem, Fire Emblem Heroes. Now it appears that each key character will have their own squad or platoon. We’re crossing fingers that this might scratch that specific kind of strategy itch we haven’t experienced since Dragon Force on the Sega Saturn.
