Walking Simulators are growing up and stepping out

Today’s release of Near Death — a game about Antarctic survival and exploration — makes for yet another “walking simulator” that is mechanically much more complex than your average explore-em-up. We take a brief look at the genre (bad, not-very-descriptive name and all) and a peek at several recent games that have been sprinkling mechanics back into a genre defined by mechanical simplicity.
