Soulcalibur VI features a meaty new story mode

First announced at last year’s Game Awards, Soulcalibur VI is slated to launch in just a matter of months. With an Unreal Engine 4 facelift and running in a locked 60FPS, it’s certain to appeal to the graphics snob in your life who also likes Ivy’s ever-vanishing costume.

At this week’s E3 unveiling, we learned some additional details about the game, including the return of Critical Edge and Soul Charge. Joining them is a new mechanic, Lethal Hit, which triggers slow motion for everything but the player who activates it, allowing a big followup (and clothes battle damage, because that’s where we are now). The Chronicle Story Mode will feature both 2D and 3D cutscenes with Kilik — cursed by Soul Edge — serving as central protagonist.

While the roster is primarily a mix of returning favorites, we do know that Geralt of Rivia from CD Projekt Red’s beloved The Witcher series will be playable, and there is another new character, Grøh, who uses dual blades that can combine into a glaive-type weapon. Also he’s voiced by Takahiro Sakurai, one of anime’s most prolific voice actors (including Final Fantasy VII’s Cloud Strife, who was at one point considered for a guest spot in Soulcalibur 2 — the more you know!).
