We’ve known for a while that Rocket League has gone through a number of iterations, and that in fact, the developer Psyonix had toyed with offering different game modes in the early versions. The team settled on just the soccer mode in the final build because it offered the clearest and most compelling picture of what they wanted the game to be.
However, riding off waves of critical and commercial success, Psyonix has gone back and unveiled a new downloadable expansion for Rocket League, “Hoops.” It’s basically still Rocket League, except you’re playing basketball now. That’s… that’s all there really is to say about it?
As with vanilla Rocket League, the draw of the Hoops mode is one part car sports and two sparts sheer unadulterated spectacle, so whether it endures as a new classic alongside the soccer mode depends on whether it’s a hit with streamers. Either way, at least it’s a free update.
Rocket League and its new “Hoops” mode are available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Steam.
