Nintendo: ‘we need to do a better job’ of explaining next console to the public

We still know very little about Nintendo’s NX console, which is projected to launch in spring 2017. Current leaks suggest a handheld console with detachable side controllers, and which can also hook up to a home television for big-screen play, but Nintendo itself is remaining tight-lipped about the NX’s design and capabilities.

Nevertheless, Nintendo wants to avoid another situation like the Wii U. Despite being a modestly powerful HD console with a good (if small) library of titles, its branding makes it hard to differentiate from its predecessor, and the company admits it downplayed the signature touch screen gamepad which makes the hardware unique. Though the NX isn’t considered a replacement for the Wii U, as another device focused on innovative hardware, Nintendo wants to ensure it’s sending a clear message about what the console is and why it’s interesting.

One of the things that we have to do better when we launch the NX — we have to do a better job communicating the positioning for the product,” says Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, in an interview with alistdaily. “We have to do a better job helping people to understand its uniqueness and what that means for the game playing experience.”

Just what is ‘unique’ about the NX remains under wraps, as Nintendo hasn’t commented on any of the leaks. An official unveiling is expected later this year, ahead of the 2017 launch.

The NX’s game offerings, too, are of concern for Fils-Aime. “We have to do a better job from a software planning standpoint,” says Fils-Aime, stressing a “continuous beat of great new games” to attract more hardware adoptees. Presumably, this means Nintendo will need strong third-party support, in addition to its consistently best-selling first-party franchises like Mario and Zelda.

We’ll hopefully hear more about the NX — as well as an official name for the thing — as we head into the fall!
