We’ve covered Tempest 4000 before, including its interesting development and creator Jeff Minter’s fraught legal history with Atari, but at this year’s E3 we got a great up-close-and-personal look at this reinvention of the arcade classic.
With vibrant, luminous visuals in native 4K resolution and a period-appropriate techno soundtrack, Tempest 4000 is a rare example of nostalgia done exactly right. There are three gameplay modes — standard, “pure,” and endurance — and a whopping 100 levels. It’s out right now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and it’ll be launching in conjunction with Atari’s upcoming VCS mini console in June 2019.
Have a look at Tempest 4000’s gorgeous reimagined-retro gameplay below.
