If you’re living under a rock and somehow managed to miss hip hop artist Lil Nas X’s “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” its music video, and the ensuing discussion surrounding it, you should watch the music video right now. The song is a certified banger and reverse engineers distinctly Christian imagery to tell a story of reclaiming the narrative of sin and queer sexuality.
Since its premiere last month, the video already accumulated over 100 million views on YouTube, and sparked controversy in the spaces it predictably would because of its use of Christian mythology and imagery. At the very end of the video, Montero himself gives Satan a lap dance, then kills the big red man, removes his horns, and then crowns himself with them.
“Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” marks Lil Nas X’s second Billboard No. 1 after “Old Town Road.” So the singer certainly doesn’t need any more promotion at this point….but it hasn’t stopped him from releasing a browser game called Twerk Hero that lets you, well, twerk your way to a high score. The game takes you through multiple scenes in the music video, from his trial, to his sliding down a pole down to Hell itself. It’s ostensibly a rhythm game? But as I’m playing it now I’m still trying to nail down just what rhythm I’m making Mr. Nas X shake his ass to. The butt physics are questionable, but it ends with the iconic scene of Lil Nas X giving the devil a lap dance. So if you would like to also take part in the sexual liberation depicted in “Montero’s” music video, now’s your chance.
Here’s the link. Have fun!
