Windjammers 2 Slips into 2021 As Developers Address Netcode Feedback

No specific release window was given.

With just about three weeks to spare, Windjammers 2 has been officially delayed into 2021.

News of this came through a tweet posted to Dotemu’s Twitter account, which specifically noted feedback on the game’s netcode as a primary factor in the delay. While no official date or even window is set, it does ultimately mean that Windjammers 2 isn’t going to be making a surprise launch sometime before the end of the month.

The full statement reads as follows:

Greetings everyone,

For the first time ever since its official reveal, Windjammers 2 was playable at the Steam Summer Festival last June. Many of you jumped in this online event and we can’t thank you enough for answering the Windjammers 2 call. You shared a lot of positive feedback on the overall direction of Windjammers 2 (game design, gameplay, etc.) but also mixed opinions that caught our attention.

We analysed in depth all these mixed opinions regarding some stuffs including the lack of rollback for the online mode, which was unanimously praised in everyone’s feedback. We had to do something because Windjammers 2 online mode is also meant to encourage the competitive community to get into the game. We started to fix and add what were necessary. Nevertheless, these changes caused delays and as a result, forced us to postpone the release date to 2021.

This decision is a tough one and it has serious consequences for all of us, but we think it’s fair enough if it allows us to give you the Windjammers 2 you expect and you deserve. Windjammers 2 is an ambitious project that we love and that we cannot ruin with wrong decisions that could jeopardise its quality.

We hope that you understand our decision and that despite the delay, you will enjoy this new adventure with family, friends. or rivals.

We’ll give you news about the game more regularly (content, characters, stages, etc.) and we apologize for our silence which lasted far too long.

The release date will be revealed in due time and whenever it’s set in stone, we’ll let you know.

In other news:

Windjammers 2 is the sequel to the 1994 original game that started in arcades and only recently made its way to consoles in the past decade with a PlayStation Network and Virtual Console release. Following the PSN launch in 2017, the sequel began development, and will come to PC, Stadia, and Nintendo Switch next year. I played the game at PAX South earlier this year (before the pandemic came and prompted event cancellations across the industry), and it was one of my favorite games I played at the show. Even if I did get brutally beaten every time I played.

“There’s a finesse and muscle memory associated with Windjammers that rivals that of a fighting game, and it can be so unrelenting if you’re playing against people who are demonstrably better at it than you. I don’t know if I’d have the patience to become a master at Windjammers 2, but it’s hard to play a game that fine-tuned and frenetic and not walk away impressed.”
