Why Does Wurmple Have an Extra Horn in Pokemon Legends: Arceus?

Is it an oversight, or a new form?

Yesterday, The Pokemon Company and Game Freak showed off more of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, the upcoming RPG that seems to be doing some major shakeups with the series’ format, as well as its setting. Well, it appears the game is also taking some other strange liberties, as it has given the pre-evolved form of one of my favorite Pokemon a weird redesign of some kind? I’m talking about Wurmple, who evolves into the wonderful and lovely Beautifly or also the red-headed stepsibling Dustox if you like ugly things.

While it might have just been an oversight in the trailer, Serebii’s Joe Merrick posted on Twitter a screenshot from the Pokemon Legends: Arceus footage, and Wurmple seems to have grown an extra yellow horn on the back of its head. The presentation did showcase some new forms from old Pokemon like Growlithe, but nothing was said about Wurmple getting a new form in the upcoming game. Plus, Beautifly also makes an appearance in the trailer (at about the 1:13 mark below), and it looks the same as it ever has. Usually, new variants in the Pokemon series result in altered evolutionary lines, so it would be odd if Wurmple was getting a new horn and Beautifly was getting nothing.

Whatever the case may be, Pokemon Legends: Arceus is coming to Switch on January 28 of next year. Before that, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl are also coming to the system on November 19. Alongside the games, Nintendo is releasing a Switch Lite system featuring mascots Dialga and Palkia two weeks prior on November 5.
