The Warframe update might just one longstanding quibble. The game hasn’t always been known for its stellar stories, but its in-game factions — like the infectious Infested — have always stood out. That being said, armies of clone soldiers and “necro-capitalists” pop a lot more than your typical Zerg, Tyranid, Xenomorph, or Flood equivalent. Heart of Deimos might change that. The update seems to center on the gooey hive mind of Warframe fame.
We don’t know much else about the expansion (certainly not that we’re allowed to talk about). But we won’t have to wait long for more. After a long, painful delay TennoCon 2020 is just around the corner. The expo of all things Warframe is always chock full of new announcements about the game — usually including demos and details during its TennoLive keynote. And the Heart of Deimos teaser promises news for those who wait (plus a free Hydroid Prime and exclusive gun if you watch).
In the meantime, you can view the teaser trailer for Heart of Deimos below!

While originally planned for July 11, closer to when the show usually opens to the physical public, this year’s TennoCon will be an entirely online affair on Aug. 1, 2020. What with the whole deadly global pandemic going on and everything. Developer Digital Extremes has also said there likely won’t be any major gameplay updates or announcements till the show, so I wouldn’t expect anything new until at least then.
Still, it’s pretty exciting to see the Infested get their due. Warframe is an increasingly story-driven game. And it’s a damn good one, at that. Yet the Infested have played second fiddle to the Corpus, Grineer, and other late-game enemies pretty much since the game launched. We know very little about the “faction” — besides their brief and usually violent interactions with the other groups. Though the major story update The Sacrifice did shine a good deal more light on their connection to the rest of the in-game world.
Meanwhile, we just had a massive lore dump about the Corpus (those necro-capitalists) in the previous Deadlock Protocol update. Before that the Grineer clone scourge was the focus of a new Nemesis System straight out of the Middle-Earth games, known as Kuva Liches. We’ve even seen innocent humans under the heel of both groups. The Plains of Eidolon and Orb Vallis open-worlds feature normal people dealing with the extraordinary Warframe universe.
The Infested have a lot more to prove. They lack just a bit of the off-kilter charm the rest of the game injects via space magic, proper nouns, and thick commando thighs. Video games are full of goo monsters, after all. The legacy of Aliens casts a long shadow on the entire medium.
The only other thing we know from the update trailer is the name: Heart of Deimos. Deimos is of course the Greek god of terror, but it’s also the name of a martian moon in our very own solar system (where Warframe takes place). Phobos, the other moon of Mars, is a playable location in-game along with the planet itself. Deimos is not. Perhaps that’s a clue that this update will take place on or near Mars. Perhaps it’s referencing something else altogether! We legitimately don’t know. But we likely will soon.
