Square-Enix has reiterated that the company has been considering returning to the Final Fantasy X universe with a possible third game, and that it has a synopsis ready and waiting should the company decide to follow through with it. According to character designer Tetsuya Nomura, the chance of Final Fantasy X-3 ever happening is “not zero,” but is most likely to come after Final Fantasy VII Remake is completed.
In an interview with Famitsu (translated by RPGsite), Nomura said that a synopsis by scenario writer Kazushige Nojima for Final Fantasy X-3, but that it is “sleeping” right now.
“If we are to make X-3, we somehow have a synopsis written by Nojima-san,” explained Nomura. “It’s sleeping right now, but the plot itself does exist.”
“I had the opportunity to work with people who entered the game industry after playing FFVII. But now that phase has moved and now I’m going with people who entered after playing FFX,” adds Nojima.

Final Fantasy X is my favorite in the series, but I am a bit cautious going into a hypothetical third game, as it would likely be based on the Will audio drama that came out as part of the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster back in 2014. The story took place after Final Fantasy X-2, but fell back onto the initial recognizable elements of Final Fantasy X, to the point where it undid a lot of those characters and that world’s story in the process. But honestly, if X-3 can just straight up wipe some of that shit out of the series’ canon, that in and of itself is exciting, I guess?
Back in May, both Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 were made available on Game Pass.
