Remember Space Jam, the 1996 live-action/animation hybrid wherein Bugs Bunny and the Loony Tunes set partnered with Michael Jordan to defeat aliens with the power of basketball. If you’re of a certain age, you almost certainly remember the weird level of cultural zeitgeist surrounding the movie. With Space Jam: A New Legacy coming out soon, it seems only right to invoke that 1996 era with a throwback movie tie-in game.
Aptly titled Space Jam: A New Legacy – The Game, the new Xbox-exclusive free game is the result of a fan contest asking for ideas about what a Space Jam game should be. Developer Digital Eclipse, which is recently best known for things like Mega Man Legacy Collection and the Blizzard Arcade Collection, took the idea of a retro 2D beat ’em up and ran with it.
Additionally, Microsoft is releasing three Xbox controllers to represent Space Jam’s two factions: Goons and Tunes. The third is the Warner Bros. hardware server that acts as the inciting incident for the entire movie. All three go on sale on July 8.
The game itself releases as an Xbox Ultimate Game Pass perk — so something that subscribers to the higher tier of Game Pass get — on July 1. For everyone else, it will be freely available just ahead of the movie’s release on July 15.
