Remember Halo Infinite’s Craig? You Won’t BELIEVE What He Looks Like Now!

Be careful who you make fun of in high school, am I right

When Halo Infinite debuted as part of the Xbox Series X reveal event last year, there were various complaints of both valid and grumbling types about the game’s presentation. As so often happens, a core complaint eventually became a meme, this time in the form of a screenshot of a brute that the internet affectionately/mockingly named Craig.

According to weirdly clinical meme database Know Your Meme, “On July 23, Facebook user Ali Kay posted the earliest known instance of someone calling the Brute ‘Craig.’ At about 11 am that morning, they wrote in the Halo Plasmaposting, ‘We’re calling this dude Craig idc what you say’. The post received more than 1,500 reactions and 290 comments in less than one week.”

Later that day, 343 employees acknowledged Craig and kind of leaned into the meme. Now that Halo Infinite‘s campaign has been shown once again, it only makes sense for Craig to be an obvious comparison point for the improved graphics after the year-plus delay to assuage graphical concerns. 343 brought this glow-up to the forefront in a blog post last night.

“The team has sort of a love-hate relationship with Craig,” says Steve Dyck, character and combat director on the game. “While it was fun to see the community gravitate towards Craig, he unfortunately represented some content and systems that were not ready for prime time in that demo.”

“Craig is in good hands, trust me!” added Bryan Repka, the character art lead. “He has gone through some changes, but I am here to say that he has glammed up. He is feeling very good about himself and has fit back in well with the rest of his Brute friends. He has also picked up a new hobby and has done well for himself. Long live Craig!”

So there you go. He grew a beard, which really helps frame his face better, not to mention the mohawk. He also now looks like he’s interested in being there as opposed to the thousand-yard state that defines his initial encounter with Master Chief last year.
