PlatinumGames Teases Massive Year As It Unveils Tencent Investment

Tencent's investment into PlatinumGames allegedly doesn't change much, but it bolsters what the studio boasts as a massive 2020.

PlatinumGames has been on a killing streak with its game releases, and it seems that’ll continue into 2020. In an interview with Inside Games (translated by Siliconera), the studio promised a year chock full of surprises and announcements. The first? Apparently, that it’s been invested in by Chinese megacorp Tencent.

The investment announcement came earlier today via a press release. There was no information on how much Tencent contributed, nor on ownership information.

“We would like to announce we have received a capital investment from Tencent Holdings Limited as a basis for partnership,” the press release stated. “This partnership has no effect on the independence of our company, and we will continue operations under our current corporate structure.” However, one phrase stands out in the press release: “self-publishing.”

“We hope to use this capital to strengthen our foundation as a business and expand from game development into exploring self-publishing,” the release reads. PlatinumGames’s major titles have been published by Square Enix and Nintendo in the past, which likely limits their scope in availability.

PlatinumGames is working on Bayonetta 3.

Platinum announcing their intent to self-publish is likely one of the many 2020 surprises in store for fans, as it seems it’ll be a busy year for Platinum.

“Last year, we said that 2019 would be a year where the curtain rises for a new stage for PlatinumGames,” Sato said in the interview, according to a transcription. “We’re a bit late on that, but I believe we’ll have several big announcements to deliver early in the new year, so please look forward to that. That’s a promise I’ll definitely keep [laughs].”

Not only Platinum die-hards, but also the entire gaming community has had its eyes on the studio the past several years. According to the interview, their most recent smash hit, NieR: Automata, reached 4 million in combined shipments and digital sales. It’s also the 10th anniversary of the original NieR, so many long-time fans of the series are hoping for more related announcements.

Of course, there’s also the studio’s renowned Bayonetta series. It’s even captured the attention of Lady Gaga, who admitted to playing the game as recently as November 2018. At The Game Awards 2017, Platinum officially announced the development of Bayonetta 3, but we haven’t heard much since. Representative Studio Head Atsushi Inaba confirmed that the game is in development, but it saw “a change in design process.” Fans are hoping to hear more this year, especially as Bayonetta remastered editions prep to hit Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

In 2019, Platinum shipped the original-concept game Astral Chain on the Nintendo Switch. Astral Chain came out to decent reviews and quickly became a fan favorite for the mix of combat, customization, and occasional humor and charm that comes with Platinum’s titles.

It’s also allegedly shipping Babylon’s Fall via Square Enix for PlayStation 4 and PC pretty soon. There’s no official release date yet and very little information available otherwise for the action-adventure game, but Inaba promises more this summer.
