We’ve known for about a month that Knuckles would be making his live-action debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 when the movie debuts in theaters on April 8 of next year. But a leaked plot synopsis has given us a little insight into just what kind of character he’ll be in the film.
Spoilers for what will probably be a known factor of the movie’s marketing in the next year follow.
A summary appeared in the Copyright Catalog, revealing Knuckles and Sonic won’t be on the best of terms at the beginning of the film, as he’ll be a partner with villain Doctor Robotnik played by Jim Carrey. This makes some sense, as Knuckles debuted as a rival to Sonic in the games. Plus, echidnas were already shown to have an antagonistic relationship with Sonic in the original movie’s opening when they seemingly killed his mother figure, Longclaw.
The full synopsis reads as follows:
After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. Being directed by Jeff Fowler, and starring Jim Carrey, James Marsden, and Ben Schwartz.

The first Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie came to theaters last year just before the coronavirus pandemic began. So it is, funnily enough, the last movie a lot of people saw in theaters before lockdown. Theaters are starting to reopen in some areas, though. I just saw Spiral: From the Book of Saw last week as my local one reopened. Now that I’m fully vaccinated, I’ll probably be seeing more movies again. And one day, I’ll see Sonic the Hedgehog 2, hoping and praying that a hint of Shadow the Hedgehog will show up sooner or later.
