The upcoming Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania has included a fair number of guest characters from Sega’s history so far: Beat from Jet Set Radio, Sonic & Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog, but I do not think any are quite as odd as Kazuma Kiryu — the Dragon of Dojima — from the Yakuza series getting into a ball and rolling down the track.
Instead of bananas, Kiryu picks up Staminans around the track, partaking in the series’ signature energy drink as he rolls around.
I like to think of this as a totally normal thing for Kiryu to do. Maybe the guitar chord plays indicating Kiryu has accidentally found himself in a substory, and some dude in a monkey outfit explains to him about the high-stakes world of Monkey Ball. At first Kiryu is incredulous and wants to remove himself from the situation, but when the man in the monkey suit explains the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, Kiryu can’t help but get involved.
Anyway I guess what I’m saying is that I’m probably buying this game and only playing as Kiryu.
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania releases on Switch, PS4 & PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, PC on October 5.
