Godfall Will Come to Other Consoles After Six Months of PS5 Exclusivity

No word on what consoles those might be, however.

Today, developer Counterplay Games hosted a stream for its upcoming loot-based RPG Godfall, and it revealed a few key details and footage worth keeping in mind as we head into launch next week. But probably biggest among these reveals was that Godfall, which is launching on November 12 for PlayStation 5 and PC, will be a PS5 console exclusive for at least six months.

News of this came at the end of Godfall’s launch trailer. Once all the the footage is done and the key art and pre-order bonuses are shown, a screen showing the PlayStation 5 is shown with “PlayStation 5 console exclusive*” next to it in big white letters. However, next to an asterisk in smaller text at the bottom, it says “not available on other consoles until at least 5/15/21.” This is six months after the day of the PlayStation 5’s launch date to the day, meaning that whatever deal Sony, Counterplay, and publisher Gearbox agreed to will be up in half a year. This doesn’t mean that an Xbox Series X/S or even a PlayStation 4/Xbox One version of Godfall is going to be made available in six month’s time, but it does mean that Counterplay will be free of whatever contractually obligated deal it made with Sony to keep the game off of other consoles at launch.

In other news:

These exclusivity deals are pretty standard fare for the games industry, especially during console launch season when Sony and Microsoft are looking for any way to entice someone with only $500 to spend this holiday. But while both companies might be looking for any edge they can find right out the gate, these tend to permeate throughout the console generation, especially on Sony’s side. Just a month before Godfall’s deal is up, Final Fantasy VII Remake will be free to move to other systems in April after Square-Enix and Sony made a year-long deal to keep the RPG on PlayStation 4. There’s no word on whether or not the remake will come to Xbox consoles just yet, but there’s reason to believe it will be coming to PC based on some small text seen in a trailer.

Beyond the reveal that Godfall may come to other consoles sometime next year or beyond, the developers at Counterplay held an online panel to discuss the lore, loot systems, and world of the game. You can check out the nearly hour-long presentation below:

Godfall was the first PlayStation 5 game to be revealed as such during last year’s Game Awards. Prior to the loot action game, Counterplay Games released Duelyst, a turn-based card game for PC and Mac. The game saw six expansion packs between its launch in 2016 and 2018, and eventually saw its servers shut down in February of this year.
