There was a point where Gears of War was synonymous with Unreal Engine. Then-developer Epic would show off videos of Marcus Fenix interacting with a cube of meat to show off new technologies and breakthroughs with the engine, until ultimately finishing the series and selling it off to Microsoft. It’s no surprise, then, that Gears developer The Coalition is quick to announce that their next project will be on the relatively-recently revealed Unreal Engine 5, but that project is still quite a ways off.
“As we look to future games, we’re excited to start shifting our resources to next-gen development using Unreal Engine 5,” The Coalition writes in a blog post. The new game will likely still be in the Gears of War series as the studio was rebranded as The Coalition in 2015, which refers to the Coalition of Governments from Gears of War.
“Shifting to a new engine is a big undertaking, so we want to be clear that we will not be announcing any new projects or titles for some time,” the blog post adds.
So whatever Gears game comes next, whether it be called Gears 6 or something else entirely, is not going to be revealed or released in the next year or two. It does seem to indicate that it will be a game solely for the newer consoles, however, and not share any DNA with Xbox One.
Last year, Microsoft revealed that Hellblade II: Senua’s Revenge would be developed on Unreal Engine 5, though what exactly that means when developers only recently got access to it is a different question.
