Former Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime Opens Game Development Company Dreamhaven

Its initiative seems to heavily focus on diversity, inclusivity, and positivity.

Ex-Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime — who also co-founded Blizzard — has opened the doors to Dreamhaven, a new game development company. The publishing house currently consists of two studios: Secret Door and Moonshot Games.

Morhaime stepped down as CEO from Blizzard Entertainment in late 2018 before leaving the company in April 2019. Now, he is the CEO of Dreamhaven. He is joined by Amy Morhaime, who is the head of operations of Dreamhaven and Morhaime’s wife. 26 industry veterans, many who are former Blizzard developers, have already been hired.

“I’m excited to team up with such talented people who care deeply about games and their communities,” says Morhaime in the company’s announcement post. “I’ve always believed in the power of games to bring people together regardless of backgrounds or boundaries. With Dreamhaven, we look forward to creating and sharing new experiences with players everywhere.”

The blog goes on to state that Dreamhaven’s goal is, “to empower creators, help bring their ideas to life, and create original gaming experiences that foster meaningful connections between players.” You can read the post for more information on the individual studios within the company, such as the members leading the studios and their impressive resumes.

“We are a group of friends with a passion for games,” says the company’s about page. “Together, we have launched numerous large scale games and projects. We have felt our hearts lifted by the communities that have formed around our games, and have also huddled to come up with solutions when things went wrong. And together, we have come to understand it is about the journey and not the destination. This is just the beginning. We believe the strongest teams not only have aligned values and trust, but also have diverse backgrounds and experiences. We are seeking more friends and colleagues who have seen the world through different lenses and will bring additional perspectives. Our company and the games we make will be better for it.”

That diversity seems to be integral to the company’s mission. Morhaime told The Washington Post that she is spending a lot of time building the company’s culture. “Diversity, as you know, is very important to me,” she says. “So how do we do that early on? How do we create an inclusive environment? We get to start from scratch with all the key learnings that we have, so I spend time thinking about that and also basic setup stuff around HR and finance and those types of things that we don’t want to burden our developers with.” She elaborates on how the company is trying to achieve this while also having hired a team that is currently composed mostly of people who have known each other and worked together for many years.

“We want to be a positive force for each other and for the global community of gamers,” states the company’s careers page. “We’re looking for others who share these values and want to express themselves and their work in a fun, supportive, and iterative environment. Cultivating an inclusive environment and increasingly diverse team is very important to us. We are actively seeking talented people from all walks of life, including those from underrepresented groups.” While there are specific positions looking to get filled, the company has an open application policy, so interested talent may apply at any time.

It has not been confirmed as to whether either studio is currently developing a game. The Morhaimes have stated in an interview with GamesBeat that they are funding the company themselves because “it’s important to control the destiny of the company in its early stages.”
