Like the migration patterns of animals, you can always count on Bandai Namco to deliver a new Dragon Ball game every two years or so, which is why it has been so strange to see the publisher be so quiet since 2020’s release of Dragon Ball: Kakarot. Apparently the silence has been because they’ve been cooking up an experimental title behind the scenes in the form of Dragon Ball: The Breakers, an asymmetric multiplayer title that seems similar to games like Dead by Daylight or Friday the 13th.
The 7v1 survival battle puts seven players in the role of normal humans (or Oolong) against a “Raider” that evolves as the match goes on. Currently, Cell, Frieza, and Buu are all confirmed as Raiders, but theoretically that could include other villains from the series in the future. Survivors can build a machine to escape the temporal seam they’ve fallen into and win the match, unless they get eaten or destroyed first. Check out this teaser/explanatory trailer below.
I don’t think this game necessarily looks great (there’s literally a modern day Wallguy), but I kind of love the idea. If they can keep it updated with interesting villains as the “monsters” and there’s a player base there, this could definitely be the kind of license that gets me into this type of game.
The Breakers is currently scheduled for a 2022 release on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch.
