Details of the Cyberpunk 2077 experience have been trickling out bit by bit from all sorts of sources, especially as the summer’s gaming conferences and conventions march out. Now, thanks to one inquiring fan, we know one more interesting tidbit: cutscenes in the game will be shown in the first-person perspective.
On Friday, CD Projekt Red forum user Shavod inquired with the official Facebook page for the game about the question of gameplay perspective. The verified page replied via private message: “In Cyberpunk 2077, immersion is very important for us, so yes, cutscenes are fpp :)”
Naturally, fans on the forums ended up most curious about this as it pertains to sex and romance scenes. Still, it obviously has bigger implications for the game in general. For one, it means that players will see their custom-built characters less frequently. It’s slightly disappointing news for fans of the game excited about the intensive character builder, which was just re-confirmed per a demo as having removed its gender-specific labeling and opting for “masculine versus feminine” builds.

The development may also bum some RPG aficionados out, as many popular RPGs, including CDPR’s The Witcher 3, show even minor dialogue in third-person perspective. (And, notably, the sex and romance scenes in such RPGs are also third-person.) But the choice to engage as constantly with first-person perspective seems consistent with CDPR’s heavy campaign focus on “immersion” for the game, as opposed to just “playing a character.”
CDPR’s most recent gameplay footage is consistent with the promise of the Facebook page. The studio’s newest “Deep Dive” video, which outlines Cyberpunk 2077’s gameplay and the in-game world more extensively, shows snippets of what appears to be important quest dialogue in first-person perspective. Some of these cutscenes appear to be more about world-building or character development. Others are clearly part of the player’s quests and actions. Regardless of context, it seems CDPR is intent on keeping the player in the world at all times, as it looks like it’ll keep the gameplay and roleplay seamless.
An interview with CDPR level designer Miles Tost, which prompted the fan’s question, also affirm’s the studio’s gameplay choice. In the German interview, Tost discusses how the perspective of the camera and the character being used are vital in gauging what sort of scale should be utilized in a setting. Walking through a room with a third-person camera as The Witcher 3’s Geralt, for instance, is going to require a different design mentality than thinking through the lens of the agile Cyberpunk protagonist V.
It looks like there are going to be exceptions to the rule, as it appears driving switches the player into a third-person perspective per the “Deep Dive” video. Given the speed at which the demonstrated bike moves, it feels essential to have a wider view. Players will also be able to see their character in several options screens.
The development feels neutral relative to the ups and downs for the game’s reputation thus far. Cyberpunk 2077 is one in a long history of AAA games with a release date pushed back to the next calendar year. The studio also faced criticism for a number of comments across various media, including an inappropriate gender joke on Twitter.
Cyberpunk 2077 is slated to release on April 16, 2020 on Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC via Steam, Epic and GOG, the latter of which is owned by CDPR. With the release date impending, CDPR will likely be confirming more details in the coming weeks and months.
