It’s extremely funny to me that Netflix decided to reveal that Big the Cat is the third known character in the upcoming Sonic Prime animated series following Sonic and Shadow, the two most popular characters in the franchise. Big the Cat, who made his series debut in Sonic Adventure, is widely derided by people who never liked these games to begin with because he’s a big (pun intended) ol’ doofus. But I love him, I will protect him, and I’m happy he’s here in Sonic Prime.
News of this came from the Netflix Geeked 2022 showcase, which specifically focused on video game adaptations today, June 10. The show included a brief clip from the cartoon, which showed Sonic running past Big and his pet frog, Froggy, while nearly knocking him over. Our speedy hero helped Big get his bearings before running off to help his friends. Big, the lovable guy he is, doesn’t have any hard feelings and wishes Sonic well as he departs.

We still don’t have much sense of what Sonic Prime will be about at this point. The environment each trailer has shown is evocative of the series’ early games, while characters like Big and Shadow are more closely associated with the modern era. So whatever’s coming, Sonic Prime looks like it will be an original take on Sonic and his friends — one that mashes different elements together.
In the meantime, the series’ second live-action movie came to theaters in April and is now available in digital stores. It contains exclusive behind-the-scenes content and a new animated short, though Idris Elba doesn’t reprise his role as Knuckles in it.
