Are you ready, kids? Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, the remake of weirdly popular 2003 video game based on the Nickelodeon animated series, finally has a release date. It’s coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Switch on June 23. Let’s go over all the information you need to know about this exciting remake.
Did you know that Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated is published by THQ Nordic? Also, did you know that particular publisher held a Q&A on 8chan, a website known for….hold on let me check my notes, “hate speech including but not limited to racism, sexism, and Gamergate dog whistling?” It’s true! It happened just over a year ago back in February 2019, and the company has not been able to shake that particular fuck up since.
Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated is coming in three editions. There is, of course, the standard $60 edition you’ll find in most stores and on digital storefronts like the PlayStation Network, Steam, Microsoft Store, and Nintendo eShop, but there’s also two special editions called the Shiny Edition and the F.U.N. Edition. The Shiny Edition will run you $149.99, and comes with a statue of the lovable sponge himself with his pet snail Gary hanging out there too, stickers and lithographs, and a pair of socks to keep your feet warm. The F.U.N. Edition comes with all of the above, but also includes a set of key rings and statues of Sandy Cheeks and Patrick Star to keep Spongebob company. Isn’t that….fun?
You know what’s not fun? Hosting a Q&A on a site known for being blacklisted from Google searches for suspicions of hosting child pornography. You know what’s also not fun? Being a high ranking employee in a company like THQ Nordic PR and marketing director Philipp Brock and giving responses like this in a company-sanctioned Q&A:

You can check out the new trailer for the game below, which shows footage of all the playable characters like Spongebob, Patrick, and Sandy and even has a glimpse of the new multiplayer mode developed specifically for the Rehydrated remake. But before you go, be sure to also check out this screenshot of THQ Nordic’s now-deleted response to the 8chan controversy (courtesy of Gameindustry.biz), where the company gave a shout out to Mark, who was supposed to but did not “take care of the nasty stuff” THQ Nordic employees were apparently aware of before they agreed to do the AMA on the site known for everything listed above.
Gosh, doesn’t that just look like a great time? You know what’s not a great time? Walking into major industry events like PAX East back in February and seeing THQ Nordic’s logo front and center for all to see right as you enter the main hall of the convention center. You truly hate to see it. But see it we did.
