Abandoned Dev Insists It’s Not Canceled, Opens Twitter Poll

Passing notes about Abandoned in class, please circle YES or NO with response.

Abandoned is not a secret Kojima game, Silent Hill revival, or canceled. Developer Blue Box Game Studios says Abandoned is still getting its Realtime Experience app update and Prologue, but after missing the Q1 2022 release deadline Abandoned: Prologue will launch when it’s “stable, good and ready.” There’s also this odd Twitter poll asking who wants to see it.

Speculation around the status of Abandoned stirred up again over the week as everyone and their Pyramid Head-shaped tinfoil hats noticed the Blue Box Game Studios’ official Twitter was deleting tweets. It does look like a few worthy of note updates were scrubbed, as Lance McDonald (via GamesRadar) pointed out mentions of the playable demo’s impending release and tweets detailing technical issues vanished.

There are, of course, internet archives chronicling the whole Abandoned ordeal from last year. The original plan for Abandoned was to release its Realtime Experience app with a teaser, and while the PlayStation Store eventually did update with said app, a patch with the teaser part never showed.

“Tech Demo will be available inside the Realtime Experience app. A notification will be sent once the patch is ready,” read a now-deleted update from Blue Box. The tweet was posted back in December 2021, months after its failed August demo launch, and nothing substantial ever came from that PlayStation app. However, according to Blue Box, speculation that Abandoned has been canceled is all wrong. The update posted to Twitter as an image reads:

“Dear community,

Recently we have been bombarded with requests and questions regarding the development status for Abandoned. In regards to the latest rumours regarding Abandoned being cancelled, our response to this is that these rumours are false. We are working on the reveal via the Realtime Experience app and online channels along with the Prologue of the game. These where initially planned for Q1 2022 but unfortunately we aren’t ready yet as we underestimated our development roadmap. Therefore we have delayed the reveal and the release for Abandoned: Prologue. We will release Abandoned: Prologue with its stable, good and ready.

We are aware of your frustration and we deeply, sincerely apologize for this. We will continue to work on the game and we will notify you when we are ready.

Our sincere apologies.

-BLUE BOX Game Studios”

After days of even more relentless internet speculation Blue Box has opened a Twitter poll, asking ” Do you want us to show DEVELOPMENT footages of Abandoned: Prologue?” with vote options of “Yes” or “No, just work on a reveal.” I’m not sure what this is supposed to help with, but Blue Box is asking that we manage expectations on whatever may come. At this point, I’m hooting over the whole thing; I’ve got no horse in the race.

Blue Box founder Hasan Kahraman is also clarifying that Abandoned is self-funded, and the Prologue was meant to provide additional income. He’s tweeted that Sony isn’t funding it, a nervous publisher “cut off” funds, and that Abandoned is coming to PC.

It’s a confusing saga, and there’s not even a tiny part of me that believes anyone will get what they’re looking for out of it. Blue Box has a history of canceled games and a failed Kickstarter, which, sure, isn’t a strange games industry occurrence, but its only other game that seems to have something to show for the effort is this Fatal Frame-like project now under another developer.

That’s a lot to say: it’s still unclear what the game really is or what’s going on. But, ultimately, I reckon the silliest piece of this story is that Sony hosted all of this hubbub on their platform, something more curated than services like Steam, and did not acknowledge the mess in any meaningful capacity.
