Sony has released some statistics for what y’all downloaded the most from the PlayStation Store last year, and you might be surprised to learn that Fortnite was not the most-downloaded free-to-play game on the PlayStation 4 in 2019. You’ll have to wait to find out what was though, because first we have to talk about Call of Duty.
That’s right, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was the most downloaded PlayStation 4 game in
2007 2019, followed by Minecraft, NBA 2k19 (lol), Grand Theft Auto 5, NBA 2k20 (lmao), Rainbow Six Siege, Madden NFL 20, Star Wars Battlefront 2, The Division 2, and Days Gone. I’m honestly surprised to see Battlefront 2 in the top 10, especially since critical favorites such as Mortal Kombat 11, Rocket League, Witcher 3, and Spider-Man failed to crack to Top 15. Most of those didn’t come out this year, granted, but I at least expected MK11 to be higher up than 16th place.
Meanwhile, Beat Saber was the most-downloaded PlayStation VR game, followed by Superhot VR, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR, Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted, Job Simulator, Creed: Rise to Glory, Borderlands 2 VR, Firewall Zero Hour, Blood & Truth, and PlayStation VR Worlds. You’d be forgiven for thinking that this is also a list of every PSVR game that people downloaded in 2019, but surprisingly, such is not the case — newer releases like Hatsune Miku VR, Golem, and Doctor Who: The Edge of Time simply failed to make the grade.
It’s probably not great for the five million PSVR owners out there that of these 10 games, only Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted and Blood & Truth were released in 2019. Of course, with PlayStation 5 looming large on the horizon, PSVR’s days on the PlayStation 4 have been numbered for a while. Sony has said previously that existing PSVR headsets will work with PlayStation 5, but has been cagey about further details, so who knows if you’ll even want that functionality by the time we get there.
Finally, of the myriad free-to-play games available on the PlayStation Store, Apex Legends was the most downloaded in 2019. Surprise! Fortnite still came in at second place, and since Sony doesn’t give actual figures for any of the games on these lists, we have no idea how close the gap between Apex Legends and Fortnite may or may not have been. Still, dethroning Fortnite is a monumental achievement for any game, so I’m sure that someone at Respawn is printing this list out right now to frame in their cubicle.
This is in stark contrast to what’s happening at Epic Games, where some poor artist is being dragged, screaming and sobbing for mercy, to the Reeducation Pits. By now though, you’re used to this. Just focus on your work and everything will be fine. Maybe turn the mandatory “Good Vibes” Spotify playlist up by some. But for the love of God, whatever you do, don’t make eye contact. Not with the guards, not with the artist, not with your teammates, and especially not with your bosses. Just keep your head down and work and maybe you’ll get out of this in one piece.
