Yes, Soulcalibur 6 Is Alive, It's Still Good, And There's A Season 2 Coming

A new content batch, coming early next week, includes new moves for literally everyone, plus the return of a classic Soulcalibur character.

Bandai Namco is bringing a Season 2 content pack for Soulcalibur 6. This includes a free patch in which literally every character gets a brand new move style, called “Soul Attack.” Plus, there’s also the return of a classic character, Hilde, and a new character customization pack.

The developers have hinted that their continued support is because of two things I’ve recently discovered in the past eight or so months: One, Soulcalibur 6 is extremely good. Plus, the tournament circuit still alive thanks to a tight-knit community, which happens with many legacy fighting games and franchises. I may be biased, as someone who has a ton of Soulcalibur 6-playing friends, but the Bandai Namco’s continued support of the game doesn’t lie.

Last year, Soulcalibur 6 made a splash with its custom character creator. It included a massive range of customization options for the characters’ bodies, which led to plenty of out-of-game character recreations and memes. As many great games do, it simmered out of mainstream afterwards.

However, it made a splash at Evo and Evo Japan; the flagship Vegas event had 746 participants. (Disclosure: I ran an early-stage bracket for the game, plus some for Smash, at the event.) The latter will have yet another Soulcalibur 6 tournament this January.  And that’s on top of the game keeping healthy numbers at locals and larger “majors” around the world. So thanks to the upkeep of the community by dedicated fans, Bandai Namco continued to support the game.

Soulcalibur 6’s new season comes with a fresh customization pack for all your custom character shenanigans.

What’s In Soulcalibur 6 Season 2, Then?

Bandai Namco announced Season 2 as being in development Evo in early August, and it’s finally almost here. The first part, a giant update patch, will come on November 26.

Most players have been concerned with the giant PDF list of balance updates. Just as a temperature check, pretty much everyone has been hoping for some nerfs on Azwel. In the end, it looks like almost everyone got some buffs, while the less popular characters received a mix of nerfs and buffs. The point is, everyone is able to beat each other up more, and hopefully this raises trash-tier characters from the dumpster.

But more importantly, there are some new moves features for every character. The talk of the town is the “Soul Attack,” an offense move that sets off the “Soul Charged” stage. The main advantage of this method is that Soul Charge is normally activated in a manner that knocks the opponent away, where as Soul Attack keeps you within range (as attacks usually do). This brings in advantages for characters who need to maintain a close distance to keep up with their opponents.

If you had trouble resisting Unblockable and Break Attacks, they’ve also introduced “Resistance.” The new “Resist Impact” moves takes up half of a Soul Gauge bar, and a successful intended block will restore some Guard Stamina. So if you rely on that, it may be a good move to learn.

Plus, every character has a new mix of moves, even aside from the previously mentioned new tricks. Like, literally every character in Soulcalibur 6. Has brand new moves.

Of course, Hilde is also coming back into the series in style. She’ll be available the next day, on November 27; you need to buy her, but her moveset looks pretty enticing. She wields a pike and a sword, using the former for mid-range attacks and pulls, and the sword to drill things in. We don’t actually know her full moveset, for now, especially given literally everyone got new moves. Plus, the meta’s probably about to shift drastically, so no use trying to stack her up.

Those who are interested in the customization options will be pleased to hear that, yes, this includes a  new set of creation options. Every character update this season will include a new Armor Set, as with last season.

There’s no word on how much the Season Pass nor individual characters will cost this time. However, last season, the pass with three characters and two packs cost $39.99. This one includes four characters and four armor packs, so changes are there may be a pricing change.

(Don’t forget, by the way — there’s also the Samurai Shodown character Haohmaru coming later this season as the following DLC character.)
