What is Borderlands 3?

Borderlands 3 is the latest entry to Gearbox’s looter shooter series. This entry focuses on the evil Calypso Twins, who start a cult known as the Children of the Vault. This organization mostly replaces the bandits you fought in previous Borderlands games. Presumably, this third game will revolve around taking the cult and its twin terrors down — whatever their goals may be.

Borderlands 3 will also see the return of many characters from Borderlands 2, as well as characters from Tales from the Borderlands. However, it’s been confirmed that long-standing antagonist Handsome Jack is definitely dead (for real this time) and not returning for this new installment.

What is the Borderlands 3 Release Date?

You’ll be returning to Pandora — and several other planets — once the weather begins to cool down here on the real world. The Borderlands 3 release date is set for Sept. 13, 2019 on all platforms.

What Consoles is Borderlands 3 Releasing On?

You’ll be able to play Borderlands 3 on most current generation consoles. You can grab this game on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Unfortunately, you can’t grab Borderlands 3 on the Switch. At least that hasn’t been announced yet. Borderlands 2 made it to PlayStation Vita, after all.

But it’s also important to note the Borderlands 3 PC distribution method. The game will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store until April 2020 — much like several other high-profile PC games of late. Then it’ll be available on Steam.

What Classes Can You Play As in Borderlands 3?

At launch, you’ll be able to play one of four Vault Hunters in Borderlands 3. They each have their own abilities:

  • Moze the Gunner – Moze uses a mech to attack foes, moving up from the stationary turrets of the previous games. Other players can just on top of the mech can helps with firepower, too!
  • Amara the Siren – Amara changes things up from the Sirens of the past by being melee based. She’s not afraid to get into the faces of her foes and beat them down. You can check out a breakdown of all Amara skills in Borderlands 3 right here.
  • FL4K the Beastmaster – FL4K can control beasts to help him in battle. Not much is known about his abilities as of yet beyond that.
  • Zane the Operative – Zane is a gadget master. He can use his deadly devices to attack and distract. You can check out a breakdown of all Zane skills in Borderlands 3 right here.

Are There Microtransactions in Borderlands 3?

Borderlands 3 will have microtransactions in the form of extra cosmetic items you can purchase. Despite the protests from Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, cosmetic purchases made with real-world money are still microtransactions.

When Does Borderlands 3 Take Place in the Series’ Timeline?

Borderlands 3 takes place after all the currently released games in the series — including the Telltale title Tales of the Borderlands. If story and lore is your main draw to the series, you’ll have to make sure you’re caught up!

At the very least Rhys, one of the two playable characters from Tales, appears in Borderlands 3 (with a new look). And the adventure game series is pretty excellent anyway. But if you don’t care about story, you don’t need to know everything to shoot up a bunch of bad guys.

What’s New in Borderlands 3?

Borderlands 3 is sticking with the tried and true formula of its mainline predecessors. While the new title has gotten some big upgrades, much of the core gameplay is exactly the same; it’s a cooperative looter shooter with a linear story. There are a few new things to look at, however!

New Worlds – According to trailer teases, players will be able to visit different planets in this Borderlands installment. It makes sense, as your base is a spaceship.

New Elemental Damage Type – Borderlands 3 introduces a new damage type, Radiation. However, it replaces the old Slag element.

New Playable Classes – As mentioned above, you can choose between three entirely new class types. Just like in Borderlands 2, none of the previous characters will be playable in Borderlands 3 at launch.
