We know EA is taking us to a Galaxy Far, Far Away with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sometime soon. At E3 2019, we learned more about Respawn’s latest crack at revitalizing a struggling Star Wars line of games for EA. And you can watch the entire 15-minute gameplay demo of Fallen Order below!
What is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order?
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a single-player action adventure game from Respawn Entertainment, makers of Apex Legends and Titanfall 2. Set just after the events of the film Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Jedi: Fallen Order focuses on Cal Kestis, a Padawan on the run from the villainous Empire.
We know that the game is mainly a single-player experience. Respawn has been known more recently for its multiplayer game Apex Legends, but they delivered an unforgettable story campaign in Titanfall 2. And the Fallen Order gameplay itself looks very much in the vein of third-person action games like Uncharted. The gameplay trailer shows Cal wall-running and jumping over large gaps — even using Force powers to swing from a vine.
Once in combat, it looks like lightsabers are main order of the day. Our hero first ignites the laser sword to illuminate a dark hallway. However, once he encounters enemy stormtroopers for the first time, things get a little bit more active. Cad can apparently block and deflect blaster fire back at foes (which isn’t too surprising for a Star Wars game). Though he eventually mixed this ability with a time-stop skill. At one point, the demo shows the protagonist stop a blaster bolt in midair. Then he uses the Force to pick up the offending stormtrooper — only to shove him onto his own shot.
None of these enemies seem to pose much of a threat (at least in the demo). Things get a bit dicier as Purge Troopers — a type of Star Wars enemy unique to Jedi: Fallen Order — appear. These darkly clad melee troopers seem to take a bit more of a beating than your usual fodder. We see Cad strike, parry, block, and dodge in what looks like a melee duel throughout the demo. Though even the Purge Troopers didn’t last long.
Though the developers did explain things might get more intricate later on. Even in the 15-minute demo, we see Imperial forces doing battle with a mass of “flame beetles.” Respawn further elaborated that opposing enemies throughout the game will do battle with each other. You can stand back and watch, or get in and mix things up. The choice appears to be yours.
Even so, a mini-boss battle against a mama beetle alien seemed pretty mandatory. Between this and clips of an AT-ST (shown in montage at the end of the demo), it seems like not every battle will be against humanoid enemies. Large, evil droids also seem to play a major factor.
