Deathloop Continues to Ooze Style in New Trailer and Artwork

The timed-exclusive is still set for May.

Earlier this week, Arkane Lyon released some new concept art for the upcoming and much-anticipated Deathloop. Created by Sergey Kolesov, who also made several gorgeous pieces for the Dishonored series, the artwork is striking — as so much of Deathloop already is.

“Creating an immersive in-game world is extremely challenging and motivating,” wrote Sébastien Mitton, the game’s Art Director, in an email sent out to a Deathloop mailing list. Its content can be found on Prima Games and Skewed & Reviewed. “For DEATHLOOP, we drew inspiration from books, movies, music, and real-world places to create Blackreef Island. Key inspiration came from the Faroe Islands, which have a very wild and mysterious atmosphere (just Google it, you’ll understand) and The Thing (Carpenter, 1982), as we love the cold, isolated and intimate atmosphere of this masterpiece.”

He goes on to say that, in Blackreef — the lawless island where the story of Deathloop takes place — you will “find a mix of warm 60s vibes, technology, madness, possibilities, and fun.”

“We can’t wait to show you,” he signs off. “Thank you so much for your support – We know how much the community enjoys the art featured in our games, and our dedicated art team is happy to continue the tradition. Please enjoy an exclusive first look at some in-game paintings that will fill the world of DEATHLOOP.”

You can look at high-resolution versions of the artworks below:

Additionally, on Feb. 12 PlayStation uploaded a short new trailer for Deathloop on Twitter. As of the writing of this article, it’s only been uploaded on Twitter; it’s not on YouTube yet, so the video is quite compressed. For now, fans will have to enjoy these 30 seconds’ worth of crumbs.

Deathloop was first revealed during the PlayStation 5 reveal event held last year. In it you will play as Colt, an assassin stuck in a time loop on the island of Blackreef — a former army base where strange experiments once took place. A rivaling assassin, Julianna, is dedicated to hindering Colt’s goal of putting an end to the loop trapping the island in an endless cycle. It is her goal to preserve the loop, which can be broken once Colt takes out eight key targets. The game will focus on their struggle as they fight each other and escape being hunted by the island’s inhabitants. It will have a multiplayer mode in which you can play as Julianna and sneak into another player’s campaign to kill them as Colt. This is an optional mode, though — you can choose for Julianna to be controlled by an AI during your campaign.

Deathloop is being developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda. It is coming to PlayStation 5 and PC on May 21, 2021, with a one-year console exclusivity deal. It will come to Xbox consoles sometime after May 21, 2022, despite Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Bethesda. It was originally scheduled to launch alongside the PlayStation 5 but was delayed due to COVID-19 complications.

“…The health and safety of everyone at Arkane Lyon remains our top priority,” the studio said in the initial announcement. “As we’ve adjusted to work-from-home, we found that delivering this new and exciting experience, at the pois hand quality level that defines both an Arkane game and a true next-gen experience, is taking longer than normal … Thank you for your support and excitement. Your positive feedback has helped fuel us as we continue to work from the confines of our homes.”
