Borderlands 3 Drops "Day 60" Patch With New Content, Balances & Fixes

Takedown at the Maliwan Blacksite and Mayhem 4 finally arrive for endgame players; plus, a mix of quality-of-life changes for everyone.

While the most dedicated Borderlands 3 fans wait for the upcoming campaign DLC, the team at Gearbox was preparing to drop what they called on stream the “Day 60” patch. Every player got a little something in yesterday’s patch. For end-game players, that means more ways to challenge themselves through Mayhem 4 and the new Takdown at the Maliwan Blacksite. For everyone, it means little changes that hopefully make the BL3 experience a little better.

The content updates are part of a roadmap presented not too long before Borderlands 3 as released. The plans started with the Bloody Harvest “event,” a free Halloween-themed content drop that started in October and runs until December 5th.

Of course, since there’s one update, they might as well do a nice quality-of-life patch and a few bug fixes here and there. Here are the big-hitting details you need to know about the new Borderlands 3 patch.

BL3 Endgame Content: Takedown and Mayhem 4

The “Takedown” is an entirely new concept in Borderlands 3 —think of it like an extreme-level raid in an MMORPG. And in fact, in the patch description, they call The Takedown at Maliwan Blacksite an “extreme challenge.”

“Lorelei has recruited the Vault Hunters to destroy a top-secret weapon Maliwan has been developing at their Blacksite,” the patch notes read. “You and your squad should prepare for an extreme challenge because this content is balanced for four players at level 50.” In short, don’t trek in solo on your first try, unless you’re really desperate for death.

And definitely don’t go in expecting to pop right back up if you’re beat down. There’s no respawning unless you die before the Valkyrie Squad, which appears to be the first half of the Takedown. And if your team actually manages to beat the final boss, yes, you can come back to leech off the loot, you freeloader. (Gearbox advises bringing Second Wind if you plan on dying.) It looks pretty worth it for the aesthetic itself, so best of luck!

If that isn’t enough, Gearbox claims Mayhem 4 is “the toughest challenge in the game.” They’ve upped the health values of all the enemies and tweaked how modifiers work — “Mayhem 4 will only roll one positive modifier for the player and one enemy bonus modifier,” Gearbox explains. “We want players to try different builds without severely hampering their ability to take down enemies in Mayhem 4.”

However, with great challenges come great rewards. Gearbox claims to have added brand-new exclusive Legendary loot, in the form of weapons and class mods. If you’re a collector at heart, it may be worth a shot.

General Day 60 Changes You Need To Know

There are also plenty of other changes for all in this Borderlands 3 patch that’ll make general progression plenty easier. For instance, now you can beat on a dummy to see how your abilities work! Here are the top quality-of-life changes you need to know, straight from the patch notes:

  • Bank Expansion — All characters now begin the game with 20 bank slots instead of 10. The existing Bank SDUs will give everyone a total of 100 available spaces. An additional 10 Bank SDUs are available to purchase in Marcus’s shop on Sanctuary III using the in-game cash currency, each awarding 20 spaces, for a grand total of 300 total bank spaces!
  • Dedicated Loot Pools for Bosses — All bosses have been updated with new loot pools that give them dedicated Legendary items to drop. Players can now discover which bosses drop their favorite gear and more easily farm their favorite items. Let the hunt begin!
  • Additional Vending Machines — The following environments have received additional vending machines. They can typically be found before bosses or the mid waypoint in larger environments: Athenas; Atlas HQ; Lectra City; Jakobs Estate; Voracious Canopy; Tazendeer Ruins; The Pyre of Stars.
  • Target Dummy — Players can take out their aggression, or test their gear, on a Handsome Jack target inside the shooting range on Sanctuary III.

If you’ve reached the endgame, there are a ton of balance tweaks for endgame abilities for Moze, Zane, and FL4K. Similar, again, Gearbox has thrown in a giant list of bug fixes. If you were eyeing any common issues in your game, definitely go ahead and check them out. They’re a little too immense for this post, so if you’re curious, check out the official patch notes.

There are also three “hotfixes” that affect some players, including one for the Maliwan Takedown. Gearbox explains that these are applied once your game is updated on boot and are stored in local memory temporarily; once you turn off your game, the hotfixes disappear. If you want these to remain implemented, you need to remain connected to the internet.
