Do you like loot shooters? How about limited-time events in your loot shooters? Well, like ’em or not, they’re pretty much here to stay for the foreseeable future. Such is the case of the first free Borderlands 3 DLC. It’s a free Halloween event in the spirit (ooh, spoooooky) of The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned — the first-ever piece of Borderlands DLC. It seems much smaller in scope than that original update, but what do you expect? It’s free! Actually, we’ll tell you what to expect in our Borderlands 3 Bloody Harvest guide. Boo!
When Does Bloody Harvest Start in Borderlands 3?
We don’t have a totally definitive answer to this one. Yet. Borderlands 3 Creative Director Paul Sage says the update will arrive sometime in “late October.” That lines up well with the Halloween theme. It is, however, not very explicit. We’ll probably know more closer to the release of Bloody Harvest in Borderlands 3. We’ll also let you know when the event is set to end, as it is a limited-time mission with exclusive rewards.

When Does Bloody Harvest Start in Borderlands 3?
We know a good deal more about this one! You can begin the Bloody Harvest in Borderlands 3 as soon as you leave Pandora for the first time in the main campaign. You need to finish the quest that leads to you activating Sanctuary III: the spaceship that serves as your home base throughout the game. That’s just a couple hours into Borderlands 3 if you beeline through the story. And you really should punch through the main plot.
Once you start exploring the universe, you can’t actually access the majority of Bloody Harvest right away. Its new map and exclusive gear is locked behind Hecktoplasm. This is a special resource that drops from possessed enemies throughout the worlds.
Hecktoplasm goes to Maurice. This is the Borderlands 3 event NPC that will debut alongside Bloody Harvest. He’s a talking Yoshi that grants you access to Heck: the new map available in Borderlands 3 via Bloody Harvest.
Borderlands 3 Bloody Harvest Rewards & Weapons
Rewards in the Bloody Harvest event are split into two categories. There are cosmetics — like a global weapon skin and a weapon trinket. Then there are weapons themselves. You acquire these in different ways, and with different rarities depending on your luck.
Cosmetics are tied to challenges you will complete in Borderlands 3 during Bloody Harvest. Sage didn’t get specific about these, either, but we can make some guesses. One would assume they’re tied to Hecktoplasm and the new enemies: specifically Rakk-O’-Lanterns and Captain Haunt. The latter is a new boss in Bloody Harvest based on the Captain Traunt foe from Borderlands 3 proper. The spooky Rakk deal Incendiary damage. Whereas Captain Haunt will likely inflict Terror (a new debuff) at the very least.
The new gear, meanwhile, is specifically tied to fighting Captain Haunt. You can get two new weapons, a shield, and a grenade mod. All of these seem to come in various rarities! That means you will likely need to fight Captain Haunt multiple times over to get the Bloody Harvest Legendaries you almost certainly desire. Sage did mention that Mayhem Mode will still work during the DLC event, though, so try to unlock that first for better stats.

Lastly we have Terror. This is the aforementioned new debuff introduced in Borderlands 3 Bloody Harvest. The status effect “partially shrouds your vision in a mysterious mist and weakens your gun handling, accuracy, and spread.” Luckily, Sage said that the new gear and Anointed drops you receive during the Bloody Harvest event will be able to turn Terror to your advantage. It’s not clear if Terror will continue to be a major factor after the Borderlands 3 Bloody Harvest ends, though.
We’ll be sure to update you about this, new cosmetics, further DLC, Legendary drops, and more as we approach the Bloody Harvest in Borderlands 3 this October. Until then, make sure you buzz through that story and unlock Mayhem Mode as soon as possible. You’re going to want those increased drop rates!
