MHW weapon augments demand all kinds of materials since the Iceborne expansion. That includes the Tempered Azure Horn, available only in the special Guiding Lands region that unlocks late in the game. This very rare material is only found in one very specific place, from one very particular creature in Monster Hunter World. But you’ll likely want quite a few! You use the Tempered Azure Horn to create high-level elemental damage augments on Rarity 10 weapons. You also need a few to upgrade the Awakening Charm, which provides the Free Element/Ammo Up ability to its maximum level.
This allows you to deal the maximum amount of elemental damage with gear like Bows — which see huge dividends from that kind of stat. But what is the MHW Tempered Azure Horn? Where do you find them? And how do you farm them once you do? Let’s find out together!

Tempered Azure Horn Location – MHW Iceborne Guide
You can likely guess a lot about this item from its name. The Tempered Azure Horn comes from a tempered monster. Specifically, you can acquire it by fighting any Tempered Kirin in the Guiding Lands. Its Tempered Azure Horn material will drop like candy — both from “shiny” drops (those glowing, white stones that pop off of monsters) and in your quest rewards whenever you report to the Handler.
You can increase the number of Tempered Azure Horn drops with a couple of tricks. The first is to equip one level of the Geologist Skill on your hunter. The reason why might not seem obvious at first. The ability description simply says that it lets you gather from bonepiles more often than usual. Since the Tempered Azure Horn doesn’t come from bonepiles, that doesn’t make much sense.
However, intentionally or because of a long-ignored bug, the Geologist skill also produces double the shiny drops in the Guiding Lands. Every time you pick up a shiny, you actually get two grabs — as if the glowing orb was a bonepile to gather from itself. This effectively doubles your MHW Tempered Azure Horn farming in the field.
Guiding Lands Shiny Drop Tips for MHW
The next trick is, of course, to produce more shiny drops in the first place. This is extremely easy in the Guiding Lands. You just need to slam creatures — in this case a Tempered Kirin — into walls, stones, and other solid objects. Just use your Clutch Claw to latch onto their face, ensuring you have a glob of Slinger ammo to fire. Next, aim the monster in whatever direction you want by pressing Circle or B (depending on what controller you use).
You can usually do this a total of three times if they aren’t enraged. If you mess up, they will automatically enter an enraged state, and you won’t be able to slam them again until they calm down.
Each time you do push the monster, though, it will turn about 45 degrees or so. Then, once it’s facing and near a solid piece of the environment, launch your Slinger ammo into its smug mug by pressing R2/Right Trigger. The beast will lunge forward a couple dozen feet and (hopefully) hit an obstacle. If that happens, the monster will drop three or so shinies to plunder! If it’s a Tempered Kirin, these can include a Tempered Azure Horn or two.
Monsters also drop these shinies whenever you break their parts — just like when you’re outside the Guiding Lands. The important thing to note with Kirin, specifically, is that this creature only has one breakable point. That’s its horn. Once you snap that off, there’s nothing else to break, making it slightly trickier to farm Tempered Azure Horns than other Guiding Lands materials.
The last important piece of the puzzle is luring out a Tempered Kirin in the first place. It’s not entirely easy! The beast will only show itself if you raise the Guiding Lands’ Coral Region to Level 7. Once that happens, you can summon a guaranteed Tempered Kirin with bait. Just go to the Handler and choose to lure out a monster. If you have any Kirin bait, acquired by breaking monster parts and collecting tracks, the result is sure to be a Tempered version. And you can finally get your Tempered Azure Horn. Otherwise, log in and out of the Guiding Lands repeatedly to reset the monsters there. You might get lucky!
