For many, the Shrink Ray will likely be the first Science Weapon you discover in The Outer Worlds. The Halcyon colony is full of such wild and wacky devices — powerful weapons with unique effects. Most of them take a good deal of time and effort to acquire. That’s not the case with the Shrink Ray! The Outer Worlds leaves this Science Weapon right out in the open, ready for you to find, if you know where to look. Although it does take some amount of effort in the early game to reach it. Let’s find out what it takes with our Outer Worlds Shrink Ray location guide!
First things first: you have to get out of Edgewater. This is the first town, located on Terra 2, that you spend any significant amount of time in throughout The Outer Worlds. It’s a bit of a dump, but it’s also the only place you can get a power regulator to fix your ship: The Unreliable.
There’s a mid-sized quest involved with this that ends in a blatant moral choice for you to consider. No matter what you do, though, you should get off the planet just fine! At which point the entirety of The Unreliable becomes available to you. You can chat with any party members you picked up, check your captain’s log, or learn about the colony from your ship-board A.I. We’re mostly interested in the captain’s log.

A few of the messages will tell the tale of the Shrink Ray. It’s a prototype being developed by Phineas. In case you’ve forgotten, Phineas is the debatably stable scientist that sprung you from cryogenic sleep at the beginning of the game. Once you get out of Edgewater, he will give you instructions toward your next major story quest.
But you don’t have to listen to him! At least, you can make some detours, first. And there’s one very important place to visit as soon as you get your ship up and running: Phineas’ lab.
Yeah! The Outer Worlds doesn’t make it obvious, but you can just go visit your pal pretty much right out of the gate. There are a few nice items you can acquire there — without it being qualified as stealing — and some terminals to access if your hacking is high enough. Those will give you some early hints about the story.
You’re really just here for The Outer Worlds‘ Shrink Ray, though. It’s deeper in the lab, after you disembark from your ship, right inside the zone where Phineas greets you. Phineas himself will be safe and sound behind bulletproof glass. But the Shrink Ray is right out in the open — on a table in front of the man. There is no penalty for just picking the gun up right then and there! Despite what your computer might imply, Phineas seems perfectly happy for you to have the Science Weapon right off the bat.
The device works pretty much as described, too. It… shrinks enemies! That makes them more “manageable,” as Phineas puts it, and allows you to kill them much easier. The downside is that the Shrink Ray doesn’t do much direct damage. Nor is the shrinking effect permanent. You will likely still need to rely on normal melee or ranged weapons to finish the job. Overall, though, it’s worth it just to see the effect of the Shrink Ray in action. And you can increase the effects by raising your Science skill when you level up!
And that’s it for our guide to the Shrink Ray in The Outer Worlds! Enjoy your new toy. After that, feel free to come back and check out the rest of our coverage of The Outer Worlds, and find even more Science Weapons to play with. Take care!
