Super Mario 64 Navigating the Toxic Maze Guide – How to Get the Star

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a collection of three of the Nintendo mascot’s best games. Spread across several console generations, players will be able to enjoy Super Mario 64Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. Each of these titles is considered by many to be some of the best Mario games in the plumber’s entire catalog, with Super Mario Sunshine getting its first re-release since it launched in 2002.

Given the sheer age of these games, some of the Stars will be tricky for players to earn due to the sheer lack of information given in-game. One of these Stars is tied to the Navigating the Toxic Maze mission in Hazy Maze Cave. Revolving around moving through toxic fumes that quickly kill Mario, you’ll need to escape before the poison drains your life. This is easier said then done, especially if you don’t have the Metal Cap unlocked.

Here’s how to beat the Navigating the Toxic Maze mission:

How to Complete Navigating the Toxic Maze

When the mission starts, head to the right and follow the long path until you reach a large open room filled with enemy spiders and a map on the left side. Enter the first door on your left to reach the maze’s starting point. When you drop down vias the hole, immedetaely run forward until you’re on high ground. If Mario is ever under the toxic fumes for more than a second he will take a large chunk of damage. Because of this, you’ll want to restrict your movements and always kill the floating Snifit for live giving coins.

From the highground, run straight, hang a right, and then take an immediate left to reach another small piece of highground. There will be a goofer enemy, so just stand on his hole so he cannot come out and attack. Do not go forward and ground pound the blue coin button. From your new piece of highground hang a right back into the toxic fumes. Keep following the path until you pass by another floating Snifit in the poison gas. Above you, to your left, you’ll see an opening with as door you can jump to.

Perform Mario’s back jump or triple jump to reach this area. I prefer the back jump, which is done by running forward and then quickly pulling the movement stick in the opposite direction while hitting jump. I recommend practicing this a few times before you head into the maze! If you’re having trouble staying alive, keep jumping as Mario to keep him above the poison. He will only take damage if he’s below the toxic gas for a second, so you can cheat the game by constantly hopping up for fresh air.

Once you reach the door, head through, and navigate past the bats and fire jets towards to platform at the end. Make sure to grab the line of coins to replenish your health so an enemy doesn’t accidently kill you! Ride thew platform up and claim your Star! See, that wasn’t so bad. You’ll need to go back into the maze and take the other raised door for the next Star, so get used to being down in the poison.
