Smash Ultimate Simon & Richter Guide – Moves, Outfits, Strengths, Weaknesses

Smash Ultimate includes characters of all kinds — regardless of franchise, species, and even profession. That inclusiveness now extends to vampire killers. That’s right Simon and Richter Belmont, two of Castlevania‘s most famous Dracula slayers, are now playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Although Alucard was unfortunately relegated to assist trophy status. Still, these are some exciting new characters with a mostly-shared move set that really separates them from the pack.

Smash Ultimate sports 74 different playable characters at launch — including every single previous character from the super-franchise and a bunch of fresh faces. That’s not even including the glut of DLC fighters, assist trophies, and more. There’s so much that no one person could possibly keep track of everything. That’s why we’ve compiled a guide to every single character.

No member of the Belmont family would be caught without their bloodline’s signature whip. Well, most of them wouldn’t, anyway, and Simon is no exception. His powerful holy weapon gives him incredible zoning potential (i.e. he can keep bad guys at a distance) and allows him to recover from otherwise fatal falls.

According to Nintendo’s official character description of Simon Belmont…

The protagonist of Castlevania. He uses his holy whip, Vampire Killer, to perform a smash attack with long reach. He also uses projectiles like an axe, holy water, and cross.

And here’s Nintendo’s bio for Richter Belmont…

Richter from the Castlevania series joins the battle as Simon’s echo fighter! His basic attacks are the same as Simon’s, but with subtle variations. In addition to that, his holy water is a different color.

Simon and Richter Moves

Axe (B) – Throws an axe that curves and passes through obstacles. Tilting left or right while it arcs changes the distance.

Cross (Side + B) – Throws a cross like a boomerang. The power and distance changes if the control stick is flicked.

Simon Smash Ultimate Moves

Uppercut (Up + B) – Performs an uppercut while rising up high. Lands multiple blows if it hits the moment he leaves the ground.

Holy Water (Down + B) – Throws a bottle of holy water diagonally downward. Pillars of fire erupt from where it lands.

Grand Cross (Final Smash) – Simon traps nearby opponents in a coffin and repeatedly attacks them with crosses made of holy light. You can hit multiple opponents at the same time so try to activate the move when the opponents are clustered together.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

I turned to the God of Smash, Sakurai, and asked, “Lord, give me a zoner,” and he delivered unto me the Belmont boys. Whips, glaives, and axes galore keep your opponent away and a devastating arsenal of finishers send them flying. Keep everyone at an arm-and-a-half’s length, then laugh as they fall to your rain of weapons.

Weaknesses

Just don’t let them in too close, because quick rushdown characters can create problems for the vampire slayers. While Simon and Richter are good at keeping foes out, they struggle in reclaiming the space they prefer. Smart movement and mixing up your zoning output should help in maintaining that perfect distance.

Richter

Also, unlike some Echo Fighters, the difference between Simon and Richter is purely cosmetic. Just pick the one that’s coolest (so Richter, obviously).

Simon Outfits

Simon just might have some of the absolute weakest alternate costumes in Smash Ultimate. They’re all pure palette swaps that are barely even visible on his extremely muted color scheme. A few of them make the texture on his clothes a bit more visible, but overall it’s a real letdown. Let’s hope the Belmont family scion gets some DLC duds in the near future.

And that’s all we have to say about Simon Belmont in Smash Ultimate! He certainly looks like a strong addition to the roster — and one that brings some amazing Castlevania music to the game’s soundtrack. Now, if only he looked a little bit more distinctive with his alternate costumes, he’d be the complete package. We’ll be sure to update this guide if anything changes on that or any other front in Smash Ultimate!
