Most Super Smash Bros. players are bound to have their favorite fighters. Smash Ultimate reintroduces every character the series has ever known, after all, and some of these brawlers have been around for decades. But a few are brand-new to the uber-franchise. Many, like the pterodactyl-looking intergalactic pirate, Ridley, have been fan requests almost since Smash Bros. began. Well, those prayers have finally been answered. Ridley in Smash Ultimate is a reality.
Smash Ultimate sports 74 different playable characters at launch — including every single previous character from the super-franchise and a bunch of fresh faces. That’s not even including the glut of DLC fighters, assist trophies, and more. There’s so much that no one person could possibly keep track of everything. That’s why we’ve compiled a guide to every single character.

Ridley doesn’t have a lot to say, outside of some dinosaur-ish screeching. He’s a space pirate that prefers to speak with his actions — as well as his claws, fangs, tail, and massive mouth laser. They all add up to make quite the statement. As does his massive stature on-screen in a game of Smash Ultimate.
According to Nintendo’s description of Ridley…
Joining the battle from the storied Metroid series, Ridley’s long tail and sharp claws let him unleash a torrent of devastating attacks. His Final Smash is a powerful stream of plasma breath intense enough to bring down Samus’s starship.
Plasma Breath (B) – Spits out balls of plasma in a curve. Can be charged to shoot a stream of plasma balls.
Space Pirate Rush (Side + B) – Smashes an opponent into the ground then drags them along. Tilting up or pressing attack throws them forward.
Wing Blitz (Up + B) – Charges up and rises into the air with force. The path can be adjusted with directional input.
Skewer (Down + B) – Stabs forward with the sharp end of its tail. With the right positioning, this can be a debilitating blow!
Plasma Scream (Final Smash) – Ridley tackles foes, hurling them onto Samus’s Gunship. He then fires a devastating plasma blast at them. This move can hit up to two opponents, and anyone hit who has 100% or more damage is instantly KO’d.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Ridley has surprising mobility for such a giant, terrifying pterodactyl-like monstrosity. He likes to quickly descend on his opponent and spear them with his tail, which does some real damage if you’re accurate. He is oppressive and tricky to handle, too, throwing out heavy hits one after the other.
But bigger boys are also bigger targets. Ridley’s got a lot of surface area to hit and you can punish his bigger whiffs. Wait for a good opening to wail on him and you’ll be surprised at how quickly you can back the space pirate monster into a corner.
Ridley is a big, evil dinosaur man. He doesn’t really wear clothes. As such, there isn’t a ton to change about his overall design in Smash Ultimate. Most of his costumes are just color swaps. That said, his gold form looks awfully flashy. And a couple of the Ridley costumes show of his “Proteus” form from Metroid: Samus Returns. That’s the final evolution of his “Meta Ridley” design from Metroid Prime — not to be confused with “Mecha Ridley” from Metroid: Zero Mission…
Whatever. He’s a pterodactyl.
