There is no shortage of melee bruisers in Smash Ultimate. A lot of those characters also have ranged abilities, but fewer almost completely rely on their ability to keep foes at a distance. Palutena is an exception. Sure, she can mix it up point blank, but a lot of her moves are based on sending — and reflecting — projectiles at her foes in nearly every direction. That makes her stand out somewhat in a very crowded crew of characters.
Smash Ultimate sports 74 different playable characters at launch — including every single previous character from the super-franchise and a bunch of fresh faces. That’s not even including the glut of DLC fighters, assist trophies, and more. There’s so much that no one person could possibly keep track of everything. That’s why we’ve compiled a guide to every single character.

Palutena is the wise-cracking goddess from Kid Icarus. Essentially, she’s Pit’s boss, but she finally got to mix things up in-person in the Super Smash Bros. series. Now she’s back in Smash Ultimate and ready to unleash holy power on your friends.
According to Nintendo description of Palutena…
With her wings and staff, this goddess’s attacks cover a wide range. With her up smash, neutral special, and side special, she can create a ranged attack in almost every direction except for directly beneath her! Keep the pressure on your opponents from a distance with ranged attacks!
Autoreticle (B) – Fires energy blasts from her staff directly at opponents in front of her.
Explosive Flame (Side + B) – Sets off an explosion a distance away. The stick can be flicked to make it go ever further.
Warp (Up + B) – Teleports in any direction. Can’t attack or be attacked while warping.
Counter / Reflect Barrier (Down + B) – Counters physical attacks and reflects projectiles.
Black Hole Laser (Final Smash) – Palutena creates a black hole to pull in foes before unleashing a wide laser beam to damage and launch them. The beam deals more damage to fighters caught in the black hole.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Palutena is a unique fighter, utilizing a mix of projectiles to keep foes at bay and reflect attacks away. Her recovery is fairly decent, and she has a lot of options at any range for frustrating fighters that can’t close the gap efficiently.
Once they get in, however, Palutena falters. Her moves are powerful but slow, leaving big windows for a punish if they whiff. Spacing and smart reads will keep Palutena from being given the runaround by quick, rushdown-style characters.
Palutena has some really nice dresses. And they all go very well with her hair. Get this, one even has a gradient! That’s definitely better than some of the palette swap-y characters we’ve done guides for so far.
And there you have it! Palutena might be a goddess, but she’s not invincible. Try not to embarrass yourself by letting this divine being get beaten up by a plumber. Hopefully, this guide has helped you do just that. Thanks for reading!
