Lickers getting you down? Tired of being punched through walls by Tyrant? Bored of sensible home defense solutions? Well then come this way my friend as I explain how to find the Magnum or SMG in Resident Evil 2. For the record: Leon has access to the Magnum while the SMG is only available to Claire. However, both weapons appear in the same location.
A little way into Resident Evil 2, you’ll come across the S.T.A.R.S. Office on the second floor of the police station. In here you’ll see a locked cage containing, well, lockers. This cage holds your prize, but you need a USB Dongle Key to access the nearby computer that unlocks the door.
Leave the S.T.A.R.S. Office for now and make your way to the Library. At the bottom of the stairs you’ll find a Red Book on a table near the Spade door. Pick up the book and exit through the door (you’ll need the Spade Key, but you should have picked this up a few rooms back).
Now move across the Main Hall and enter the door on the east side of the second floor — right into the Waiting Room. Use the Spade Key again to exit this room via the other door. Once you’re in the hallway, turn left and then enter the first door on your right, into the Art Room. There is a statue in the Art Room, but it’s missing an arm.
You don’t have to look far for the missing limb, though — the arm is on a table next to the statue. Pick up the Left Arm and combine it with the Red Book. Then attach it to the statue. The statue will release its grip on the Scepter. Now examine the Scepter to find a switch on the back. Press the switch and the Scepter will release the Red Gem. Phew!
Well that was complicated. Still with me? Good. Unfortunately, you’re going to have to forget about this puzzle for a while. Progress with the story and check back in when you’ve reached the Parking Garage (this is a major inflection point for a lot of Resident Evil 2 puzzles).
What happens from here changes depending on who you’re playing as, but really only narratively. The broad strokes are the same. Now you need to gain access to the Interrogation Room.
Leon can use the Crank Handle to open the shutter near Chief Irons’ Office. From there, you just need to head down the stairs and use the Club Key to enter the Interrogation Room. Once inside, you can climb through the smashed window.
Claire needs the Heart Key, which is found in a relief inside the Private Collection Room behind Chief Irons’ Office. Once you have the Heart Key, exit the Chief’s Office and head down the staircase. Use the Heart Key and enter the Interrogation Room. Notice the non-shattered glass? Yeah, you might want to keep an eye on that…
Whichever path you take, once inside the Interrogation Room you need to pick up the Bejeweled Box from the shelf. Combine the Bejeweled Box with the Red Gem and it will open, thus revealing the S.T.A.R.S. Badge. Examine the S.T.A.R.S. Badge to find a switch on the back. Press the switch to reveal that this is in fact a novelty USB Dongle Key.
Now leave the Interrogation Room and make your way back to the S.T.A.R.S. Office. Use the USB Dongle Key on the computer, then interact with the monitor to open the cage door. Now you can claim your prize: either a shiny new Lightning Hawk Magnum or an MQ 11 SMG. Either of these guns will serve you well during the rest of your horrific trip through Resident Evil 2. Good luck and have fun!
