Outriders is the latest looter-shooter to release in this ever-growing genre. Developed by People Can Fly, this action RPG places you in the shoes of a cryogenically frozen soldier who has gained enhanced abilities thanks to a mysterious storm called the Anomaly. With four classes available upon release, players can bend time, ignite enemies on fire, summon powerful constructs, and shake the very planet. Even though some will stop after the credits roll on the 30+ hour campaign, Outriders’ endgame is the real offering for many users. Offering fifteen unique missions, these levels will be your main source of high-grade loot such as Epic and Legendary items. Tying all this together is the Challenge Tier system, which will determine your changes and the difficulty of the Expedition.
How to Unlock Challenge Tiers
There are fifteen different Challenge Tiers, each of which is tied to a specific enemy level and loot distribution percentage. When you complete the campaign, you will only have access to the first few tiers, but more can be unlocked if you achieve either a Gold or Silver medal on the highest available Challenge Tier. Meaning, if your current highest Challenge Tier is five, beating it with a Silver medal will unlock Challenger Tier 6. However, achieving a Gold medal on Challenge Tier 5 will unlock both Challenge Tiers 6 & 7.
Completing the highest Challenge Tier and achieving either of these medals is the only way to unlock higher tiers. This may seem daunting, especially if you are playing by yourself. However, just because you fail your current Challenge Tier doesn’t mean you won’t get some loot. See, each Expedition is broken up into different encounters you’ll need to finish. If you fail an Expedition, you’ll earn loot at the current Challenge Tier level for each encounter you successfully beat. This is generally how you will obtain gear to improve your Outrider even if you fail an Expedition. Remember, you have to complete encounters for loot to appear in the chest at the start of the Expedition if you end up losing.
To change your Challenge Tier, go to the Expedition table, select the map you want to play, and then use the Triggers (console) or A/D to alter the tier’s difficulty. You can see above the tier level what the loot percentage is for Gold, Silver, or Bronze times. At first, you will only see Rare and Epic, but the higher you go the more chances you’ll have at obtaining a Legendary item. Keep in mind, your World Tier has no impact on your Challenge Tier, the amount of loot you’ll earn in an Expedition, or unlocking additional levels. In fact, once you pass Level 43, the World Tier is completely irrelevant outside of farming lower-level gear.
And that’s it! If you’re still trying to get a grasp on everything Outriders has to offer, look no further! We’ve got a bunch of guides already published for you. For those that haven’t even decided on a class yet, we’ve got a primer for each of them with some information on how different they are. We also have a guide on ranking up whichever class you choose with class points and how to earn them. One of the very good things we’ve discovered is how mods work compared to games like Destiny and other looter shooters. To wrap things up, here’s how to play with friends including how you can access Outriders‘ crossplay support. Finally, if you’re struggling with bugs including the pesky invisible HUD and invisible enemy bullets, we have a guide to help you troubleshoot all of that.
